‘Arcane’ Season 2’s Most Intense Scene Features Belgian Rapper Stromae

Nov 26, 2024

Release Date November 6, 2021 Seasons 2

Netflix’s most-watched animated series has seemingly left no stone unturned after the debut of its final act just two days ago, with avid Arcane fans praising everything from the show’s devastating conclusion to its hauntingly heart-wrenching visuals. But one scene in particular has stirred up special attention even from non-viewers, due to featuring the first song from legendary Belgian rapper Stromae after a nearly two-year hiatus.

Arcane is no stranger to a well-crafted soundtrack; the OST album for its first season received a Billboard nomination in 2022, but ultimately lost to Encanto. Blending a diverse array of talented artists and emotional lyricism, artists for both seasons include heavy hitters like Imagine Dragons, Denzel Curry, and Stray Kids — but it seems like Stromae has outdone them all with “Ma Meilleure Ennemie”, a painfully beautiful ballad featuring French singer-songwriter Pomme. Since the very beginning of his career back in 2009, Stromae has more than proven his ability to craft exquisite and even upbeat-sounding melodies accompanied by mournful, depressing lyrics — and “Ma Meilleure Ennemie” is no exception.

For Arcane fans, the song’s beauty (and heartbreak) is only increased given the context of the scene in which it appears (spoilers ahead). After being transported to an alternate universe, Ekko is given a glimpse of what his life might have looked like if certain events hadn’t happened — including the devastation that transformed Powder into Jinx. He begins to fall in love with Powder, and the two are depicted dancing together to Stromae’s iconic song before sharing a kiss. It’s a painful reminder of what can never be, as Ekko must eventually return to his own universe — leaving what may be his one chance at happiness behind.

Arcane is Over — But the Franchise is Just Getting Started

After two phenomenal seasons — including multiple perfect Rotten Tomatoes scores — Arcane is undeniably over. For some fans, the show’s brief run came as a shock, since it quickly became one of Netflix’s most popular shows, earning a slew of accolades, including multiple Emmy Awards. However, Arcane’s success also came with an extraordinary price tag, with just eighteen episodes costing $250 million. Additionally, the show is the only television or film property produced by Riot Games. As a brand-new player in the streaming industry, it’s likely that Riot Games has a lot to figure out in terms of budgeting, which could contribute to Arcane’s unexpectedly short duration.

However, given the intense success of Arcane — as well as the amount of League of Legends lore that hasn’t yet been adapted for the small screen — it’s also likely that the show will eventually become part of a League of Legends franchise. Many fans have already pointed out several aspects of Arcane’s ending that don’t align with the way certain characters are presented in-game, implying there’s a lot left of their journey that could be told. With a large and dedicated fanbase already amassed, and the incredible reception that Arcane received, fans may be receiving news about another spinoff series sooner than they think. Season 2 is already breaking records on Netflix as we speak.
