The American Film Institute announced its top 10 lists for 2022 and while there were few surprises on the film side, the television side was notable for some glaring omissions. On the big screen, the 10 selections were highlighted by Oscar contenders “Avatar: The Way of Water” (screened just a few days ago), “The Fablemans,” “Everything All At Once,” “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Tar.” “The Banshees of Inisherin,” which doesn’t qualify because it was produced by international filmmakers, earned a Special Award (“Belfast” took the same honor last year).

On the television side, a rare broadcast entry made the field as “Abbott Elementary” was joined by the final seasons of “Better Call Saul,” critics’ favorite “Reservation Dogs,” the meme-friendly “The White Lotus” as well as newcomers “Severance,” “Somebody Somewhere,” “The Bear” and “Mo.”
Selected by a committee of industry and critics, the honorees will be celebrated at the annual AFI Top 10 luncheon on Jan. 13.
It was notable that this year films from Netflix, Amazon Studios, and Apple TV+ were shut out of the top 10 film selections this year.

Notable absences from the film list included “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” (“Knives Out” made the cut in 2019), “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” “Babylon,” “The Whale” and “Till,” among others.
On the television side, numerous programs were overlooked including all three sci-fi fantasy players hyped this fall, “House of Dragon,” “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” “Andor,” as well as “Atlanta,” “The Dropout,” “Barry” and “What We Do In The Shadows.”
The awards season end-of-year revelations will continue on Sunday when the Los Angeles Film Critics Association picks their best of 2022.
