‘Ballerina’ Puts ‘Lilo & Stitch’ Out to Pasture With Chart-Topping Domestic Box Office Debut

Jun 8, 2025

The summer movie season sure is summer-ing. After the blockbuster debuts of Disney’s Lilo & Stitch remake and Paramount’s Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning a couple of weeks ago, a major new movie entered the box office race this week. With From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, Lionsgate is hoping for some much-needed respite following a disastrous year. The action spin-off stars Ana de Armas in the lead role and is set between the events of the third and fourth films in the main franchise. It’s aiming for an opening weekend haul of around $30 million. Ballerina grossed an estimated $11 million on its opening day, which includes the $3.5 million that it made in Thursday’s previews. The movie was initially projected to deliver an opening in the $35 million range, but estimates have been considerably lowered. This is surprising, considering the positive reception that Ballerina received. The movie earned an admirable A- CinemaScore from opening day audiences, and is currently sitting at a remarkable 93% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. No John Wick movie since the second installment has opened with less than $30 million domestically. Ballerina will likely claim the number two spot this weekend, with Lilo & Stitch holding onto its box office crown for the third time in a row, despite its opening day win. The movie is eyeing around $32 million, after grossing around $9 million on Friday. Lilo & Stitch has had a tremendous run so far, and is expected to pass the $335 million mark at the domestic box office by Sunday, overtaking the likes of Joker, Aquaman, and Zootopia. Meanwhile, The Final Reckoning is set to grab the third spot with $4 million on Friday, and a projected third-weekend haul of under $15 million. This should take the film’s running domestic total towards the $150 million milestone.
Wes Anderson’s New Movie Broke Into the Top Five

The fourth spot went to Sony’s Karate Kid: Legends, which is eyeing a little under $10 million in its second weekend of release domestically. The movie has significantly underperformed and will just about hit the $35 million mark by Sunday. The top five list was rounded out by director Wes Anderson’s latest film, The Phoenician Scheme. The movie expanded wide this week after a record debut in limited release seven days ago. The Phoenician Scheme is looking at just under $6 million this weekend, which is lower than the $9 million that Anderson’s Asteroid City made in its wide expansion weekend a couple of years ago. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
