They aren’t always completely indicative of where The Academy is leaning, but, often, the BAFTA Awards longlists are better early indicators of potential Oscar nominations (and winners) than the BAFTA Awards nominations themselves. In that respect, the 2024 BAFTA Awards longlists are a very good sign for Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” and Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer.” Each of those films had 15 mentions, followed by Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” with 14.

Bradley Cooper’s “Mastro” and Emerald Fennell’s “Saltburn” each earned 11 mentions. The latter didn’t crack the Best Film race but stars Barry Keoghan, Rosamund Pike, and Jacob Elrodi all made the cut. Andrew Haigh’s “All of Us Strangers,” also a quintessentially British film, followed with 10 including a mention for every member of its four-member cast.
Films that got more disturbing news for their Oscar prospects were Todd Haynes’ “May December” which only saw Julianne Moore nominated in the Supporting Actress category and Sammy Burch in Original Screenplay. Both Charles Melton and Nathalie Portman were snubbed in 10 contender field lists. Netflix did not release “May December” in the UK, but it’s still a red flag for Melton and Portman’s chances at winning the Oscar (the former more than the latter).
“The Color Purple” was never expected to be a serious BAFTA player, for a variety of reasons, and only saw Fantasia Barrino and Danielle Brooks earn mentions. Cord Jefferson landed mentions in the Director and Adapted Screenplay categories for “American Fiction,” while Jeffrey Wright was part of the Best Actor mix. That Amazon MGM Studios release did not make the Best Film cut.
The final 2024 BAFTA Award nominations will be revealed by Naomi Ackie and Kingsley Ben-Adir on January 18.
