Barbie’s Oscar Snubs & Acting Nomination Gets Honest Response From America Ferrera

Jan 24, 2024

Summary

America Ferrera reacts to her own Oscar nomination for Barbie, and expresses support for collaborators Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, calling them her “girls.” Barbie’s critical acclaim led to expectations of major nominations at the Oscars, but Gerwig and Robbie were snubbed for Best Director and Best Actress, respectively. Ferrera says she is among those who wishes to see Gerwig and Robbie recognized for their work.

Barbie star America Ferrera responds to her nomination and reacts to the movie’s snubs. The critically acclaimed 2023 film was nominated for eight Oscars, including a Best Supporting Actress nomination for Ferrera and Best Picture. However, director Greta Gerwig and leading actor Margot Robbie did not receive nominations for Best Director or Best Actress, respectively, leading to much outcry online.

As per Deadline, Ferrera has reacted to Barbie’s nominations, including the lack thereof. While the star says that she is “a little bit in shock” about her own nomination, she quickly goes on to express her support for collaborators Gerwig and Robbie. She calls the pair her “girls” and says that they “set a new bar” by making “something that resonated around the globe.” Check out the full quote from Ferrera below:

“They’re my girls, and I want to see their incredible, amazing work celebrated. They made history, they set a new bar. They not only broke box office records, but made something that resonated around the globe, and the impact of what they made is, and will continue to be felt in our culture. I think I join a lot of people in wanting to see them acknowledged for that.”

Barbie’s Oscar Snub Controversy Explained

Given Barbie’s massive critical acclaim, it was expected to accumulate a number of major nominations at the 96th Academy Awards. Robbie was nominated for a Golden Globe for her work alongside a number of other awards, so it was shocking to see her kept out of the field for Best Actress at the Oscars. Gerwig, too, failed to secure a directing nod despite her Golden Globe nomination, though both Gerwig and Robbie were still nominated in other categories (Gerwig for Best Adapted Screenplay and Robbie for Best Picture, as she was a producer on Barbie).

Though Robbie was not recognized for her performance, Barbie did score acting nominations not only for Ferrera, but also for Ken actor Ryan Gosling. His nomination over Robbie raised eyebrows online, pointing out the irony when considering Barbie’s themes. The movie tackles ideas of dismantling the patriarchy, so for the male supporting character, and in-film creator of the patriarchal “Kendom,” to get a nomination while Barbie herself was left out certainly seems to undermine its message.

With all the fervor online, it is nice to see a Barbie cast member come out to support her co-star and director. While Barbie is not lacking in the department of critical recognition, to see its two main talents be shut out of the major categories is certainly disheartening given the record-breaking and landmark success the film was. Hopefully, Barbie will walk away with some awards on Oscar night to partially compensate for the disappointment.
