Benedict Cumberbatch Says He Will Make MCU Return in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

Feb 6, 2025

Benedict Cumberbatch
is proving himself to be an unreliable source for MCU spoilers, as the Doctor Strange star has backtracked on his previous statement about not being in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday
movie. After previously telling Variety that he would not be putting in an appearance in the next big event movie of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he now says, “I got it wrong.”
Cumberbatch has previously been one of several stars put in charge of other actors, such as Tom Holland and Mark Ruffalo, to try and make sure they didn’t leak information during interviews. However, it seemed that the actor had been swayed to the dark side when he recently turned involuntary informant and accidentally revealed that his sorcerer would be skipping the next Avengers movie, but would appear in Secret Wars. While appearing on the red carpet for his new movie The Thing with Feathers, Cumberbatch flipped his previous statement, telling Business Insider that his previous comments were not correct.

I got that wrong, I am in the next one.

Ok, so that’s settled, right? Well, maybe not, as when questioned further, he added, “Don’t ever believe anything I say.” So is Cumberbatch playing with everyone? It is certainly possible, and in fact quite likely. As an old hand at this kind of thing, it would not be surprising if the actor continued to zig and zag between answers to keep people guessing at what exactly is true and what is just a mystical conjuring that would make Stephen Strange proud.
Doctor Strange Will Return to the MCU

The question is not if, but when will Doctor Strange return to the MCU? While there is no exact answer, there are several theories that could see Strange making an appearance in Avengers: Doomsday, or in his own third solo movie.
Strange was last seen in the mid-credits scene of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, when he was approached by Clea – MCU debutant Charlize Theron – who requested that Strange come with her to deal with an incursion – a break between universes. Many believed that this would lead to Strange’s third solo movie, and while there are still some unnamed movies on the Marvel slate before Avengers: Secret Wars rolls out in 2027, there is a chance that the incursion in question is actually linked to either the arrival of the Fantastic Four and/or Doctor Doom into the MCU, which will set up the final act of the Multiverse Saga.

With Cumberbatch now clearly going into confusion mode, telling different stories until no one knows which to believe, it seems that we are not going to know whether any of what he says is true or not. It is therefore hard to theorize in any meaningful way, but with more than a year until Avengers: Doomsday is set to arrive in cinemas, many fans will have fun delivering some elaborate possibilities on social media. In the meantime, fans of Strange can catch up with his previous adventures, and the rest of the MCU back catalog, on Disney+.
