Sep 2, 2023

Summary

Rhea Seehorn reflects on the growth and evolution of her character Kim Wexler in Better Call Saul, expressing her willingness to revisit the character in the future. Seehorn admires Kim’s composed demeanor and poker face, admitting that she aspires to learn from the character’s ability to hide her thoughts and not nervously fill silences. Better Call Saul has received numerous Emmy nominations, but has yet to secure a win. Bob Odenkirk and Rhea Seehorn have both been recognized for their performances, adding to the show’s enduring influence.

Rhea Seehorn, known for her role as Kim Wexler in Better Call Saul, has recently expressed her willingness to step back into the shoes of her character. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter before the SAG-AFTRA strike, Seehorn reflected on Kim’s evolution, highlighting the profound growth and subtext her character underwent throughout the series. The challenge of capturing Kim’s poker face was a point of personal and professional growth for Seehorn, who admitted to aspiring to emulate the character’s composed demeanor in her own life.

“I don’t think that I will ever forget her. I hope one day there’s an occasion to revisit these characters. Getting to play one character over the course of seven years, and the massive allowance of evolving and subtext and growth that they allowed us to play — she feels very three-dimensional as a human to me. There are parts of her that, as an actor and as a human, I am still trying to learn from, but I’m not fully successful. I don’t have a poker face like she does. I would like to not nervously fill silences. It was very meaningful to me to meet fans that Kim meant so much to and for me to realize [the viewers] are often her greatest confidants in scenes, because she doesn’t let other people in the room know what she’s thinking.”

The premiere episode of Better Call Saul introduced viewers to the challenges faced by Jimmy McGill, portrayed by Bob Odenkirk, in his role as a struggling public defender. Among the standout moments was a subtly impactful scene where McGill, in a burst of frustration, kicks a trashcan, followed by a quiet yet profound moment shared with Kim Wexler. This scene, marked by its economical use of dialogue, beautifully captured the bond between the two characters. The Emmy-nominated actress’s insights into the depth of Kim’s persona and her readiness to explore it further highlight the series’ enduring influence.

Will Better Call Saul Secure its First Emmy Win?
Sony Pictures Television

Better Call Saul has reached a significant milestone with an impressive tally of 53 nominations at the Primetime Emmy Awards. However, despite its consistent recognition, the show has yet to clinch a victory in the coveted awards. Among the nominees, Odenkirk, the actor behind the charismatic yet morally complex character Jimmy, has received a well-deserved nomination. Odenkirk’s portrayal has captivated audiences, but the competition remains fierce as he faces off against actors from acclaimed shows like Succession, The Old Man, and The Last of Us. Similarly, Seehorn has secured her second acting nomination, building on the recognition she received last year.

The series finds itself vying for the Best Drama Series title alongside an array of distinguished contenders, including Andor, The Crown, House of the Dragon, The Last of Us, Succession, The White Lotus, and Yellowjackets. In response to the nominations, Bob Odenkirk took to social media to express his gratitude, acknowledging the collaborative effort that underpins the show’s success and the significance of the recognition received.

“This guy looks pretty beat up…BUT, HOORAY! and THANK YOU to everyone who enjoyed Better Call Saul, and for this Nom. We all cared SO MUCH everyday we made this show. It starts with the WRITING and I’m so thankful Peter Gould and Gordon Smith are nominated. RHEA being nominated makes my day, my year. The show being noticed, well, a dream come true. Grateful.”

All six seasons of Better Call Saul are available for streaming on Netflix.
