The Marvel Cinematic Universe is always growing and expanding, and it will continue to do so with the upcoming Black Panther spin-off TV series, Eyes of Wakanda, a new animated show that is set for Disney+. Even though the series will give greater context to Wakanda by revisiting the home of T’Challa, the show will also allow the wider MCU to expand significantly. During a chat on The Official Marvel Podcast, Marvel Studios’ Brad Winderbaum, who is the head of TV, streaming, and animation, gave an update on Eyes of Wakanda, and revealed that the series will not just be about “the history of Wakanda” and that it will serve a purpose in exploring the MCU as a whole.

“Eyes of Wakanda, more than any other show we’re doing in animation, ties in the MCU…It’s both about the history of Wakanda, but it also expands into the greater MCU at different time periods. So of you’re a fan of the movies, I think this show is going to be a real treat.”

Wakanda has already played a major part in the MCU, and was referenced a few times in the MCU in both Iron Man 2 and Avengers: Age of Ultron. But fans got more insight into the location when T’Challa/Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) was introduced in Captain America: Civil War back in 2016. The audience is introduced to T’Challa as the prince of Wakanda, who then takes over as King when his father, T’Chaka, is killed during a bombing at a UN conference in Vienna.

The 2018 film Black Panther gave even more background to Wakanda and its use of vibranium, a metal that has been used in Marvel Comics to create things such as Captain America’s shield and, most notably, Black Panther’s suit. In the film, viewers learn that the people of Wakanda have used vibranium to develop their technology and pose as an underdeveloped country to protect their assets. By the end of the film, T’Challa lets it be known before the United Nations the true wealth of Wakanda and what they have to offer via their advanced technologies.

Wakanda Has Already Been a Big Part of The MCU

In Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the country comes under pressure to share its vibranium with other nations, leading to some trying to steal it by any means necessary. All of this transpires after T’Challa falls ill with a mysterious illness and succumbs to it before his sister Shuri (Letitia Wright) can use a synthetic version of the “heart shaped herb”, a plant that is consumed by the new Black Panther to give them their powers, to save his life. Shuri ultimately takes on the Black Panther mantle and is tasked with protecting Wakanda and its assets.

Other news about Eyes of Wakanda is limited with specific story beats and voice casting still unknown, although it is said the series will follow the Wakandan warriors searching for vibranium artifacts. San Diego Comic-Con takes place at the end of the month and Marvel Studios is returning to Hall H, so it’s very possible that fans will learn more about the new series at the event.
