‘Blade’ Trilogy Writer David S. Goyer Got Rejected by Marvel Studios To Pen Reboot

Jun 29, 2025

David S. Goyer, the writer who brought Blade to the big screen for the first time in 1998, revealed he had reached out to Marvel Studios regarding the upcoming reboot. Goyer has been attached to a number of comic book properties, including Batman Begins, Man of Steel, and Batman v. Superman, and got his start turning the lesser-known character Blade into the first truly successful Marvel superhero movie. Goyer returned to pen the script for Blade II and then wrote and made his directorial debut with the final entry in the franchise, Blade Trinity. Speaking with Variety, Goyer revealed how he did actually reach out to Marvel Studios regarding the Blade reboot following the years of development hell. Almost a year ago, when the Blade reboot hit another snag in development, Goyer contacted Marvel Studios to ask if they needed help rebooting the franchise. The comapny did not employ Goyer’s services, telling him they thought they had cracked the script at the time, but did tell the writer they loved his work. Goyer said:
“It’s so funny, about eight months ago — when, not the latest hiccup hit, but like the prior hiccup — I had so many people that would say to me, ‘Dude, would you get in there on Blade? Would you just get in there?’ Whether it be friends or fans or people on social media, and I wasn’t even really thinking about it, but then I had my agent call Marvel and say, ‘Do you guys need any help?’ And they said, ‘We love you, but we think we’ve cracked it now, and we’re in a good place.’ And then the latest thing happened. And so no, they haven’t contacted me.”

Blade’s MCU Delays & Production Issues Explained

Blade has encountered many production delays and while some fans might think it is simple, there is more than slaying vampires the MCU movie must do.

No word on the movie has been made since the film was taken off its planned November 2025 release date. While the original plan was for Mahershala Ali’s Blade to debut in the Multiverse Saga, it appears he will now be saved for after Avengers: Secret Wars. Marvel Studios has four release dates saved for 2028, one of which could be for the long-awaited Blade movie. In an oddly fitting way, the next chapter of the MCU could find itself being anchored by The Fantastic Four, X-Men, and Blade, all characters that Marvel Studios gained the rights back to and were made into feature films at other studios before the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Ongoing Troubles With ‘Blade’

New Line Cinema

Despite most of David S. Goyer’s work having been in the superhero genre, it appears the writer is looking to move on and branch out into new material. However, he said his love for Blade would draw him back to the character if Marvel wanted him. Goyer said:
“I might consider it because I love the character, and it sort of started my superhero career. Even though I’m now considered a DC guy, I started as a Marvel guy. I would consider it; it would be fun to return to that world. That being said, I’m pretty much otherwise 99% done with superheroes. I love this stuff. I watch all the movies, but I’ve just done so much in the world. But yeah, I would consider it, just for old time’s sake.”
Goyer has previously spoken about Marvel Studios’ struggles to reboot Blade. Indeed, it has been a long road for the Daywalker’s MCU debut. After a big announcement at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, six years later and the studio still has nothing to show for it. They’ve gone through multiple screenwriters and now two directors. So far, the only hint of star Mahershala Ali’s Blade in the MCU is an off-screen voice cameo in the post-credit scene of Eternals. The long delay to his debut even led to a joke in Deadpool & Wolverine, where Wesley Snipes reprised his role as the iconic daywalker and joked that there will only ever be “one Blade.” Source: Variety
