Blake Lively Helped Fix ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’s Underwhelming Ending
Nov 30, 2024
Blake Lively didn’t just cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine, she had a big impact on the dramatic ending. Directed by Shawn Levy, the smash hit team-up movie (which is currently breaking records on Disney+) pitted the titular heroes against Mr. Paradox (Matthew Macfadyen), a power-hungry agent of the Time Variance Authority, and Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin), the evil twin sister of Professor X. The final scene saw Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) prepare to sacrifice themselves to save their timeline.
Speaking to GamesRadar+, Shawn Levy revealed that the initial edit of the scene had very little suspense. After destroying the time ripper, both Deadpool and Wolverine walked away unscathed, with no sense of fear about their mortality. “Credit where credit is due. It used to be that there was no suspense, that the power room blew up, and our heroes had survived,” Levy began. The director said that Blake Lively suggested the scene should be re-edited to make the audience question if the pair survived. He continued:
“It was Blake Lively who said to us, ‘You know, I’ve been with you this whole movie. I want to sit in the fear that they’re lost. Let me be in that place of suspense, so the triumph of their survival is more emotional and visceral.'”
It was ultimately the right choice. Not only did the re-edited scene add to the emotional impact of the movie, fans were genuinely concerned about Deadpool and/or Wolverine dying in the film, as we all believed it could be Reynolds and Jackman’s last movie as the characters. “It really opened up a new way of thinking about this part of the movie and it’s why we did this reshoot… and, here, the payoff is so much more satisfying,” Levy explained.
‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Only Had a “Day-and-a-Half” of Reshoots
As much as “online experts” and skeptical fans might have you believe otherwise, reshoots are a normal part of filmmaking. After principal photography has wrapped, a rough cut of the movie will be edited together. From that, the filmmakers can then see what works, what doesn’t, and what needs to be reshot. Lively’s note resulted in some small reshoots for Deadpool & Wolverine. But Ryan Reynolds revealed the entire process was far shorter than most other superhero blockbusters.
Related Ryan Reynolds’ Plan to Prevent ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Cameo Leaks was Simple – but Ultimately Pointless Ryan Reynolds had one way of stopping the many cameos of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ leaking, but Marvel spoiled them anyway.
“We did just a day-and-a-half of reshoots on the movie, which we’re very proud of,” the actor said during the interview. As well as re-editing the final scene to be more suspenseful, Shawn Levy also added a speech by Mr. Paradox, where he gloated about his plans. The actor continued, “These kinds of movies typically involve weeks of reshoots. But this speech that Matthew has is one of the pieces that we reshot. And he is miraculous.”
Deadpool & Wolverine is now streaming on Disney+. After a record breaking box office run, and a record-breaking Home Video and VOD release, the film is also breaking records on the streamer+. To celebrate Deadpool & Wolverine’s release on Disney+, Ryan Reynolds shared a deleted montage from the movie.
