Born Again’ Gains Higher 18+ Age Rating Compared to Netflix Series

Jan 30, 2025

Daredevil fans have been given the final confirmation that they needed to know that the MCU’s highly anticipated Daredevil: Born Again
will be the darkest and most brutal Marvel series ever to hit Disney+. While many Marvel shows have landed family friendly ratings, some such as Echo cranked things up to a more mature level. While the revival of Daredevil has secured a TV-MA rating in the U.S., the British rating for the show reveals just how much Marvel Studios is pushing the boundaries this time around.
Just for a little context, the previous iteration of Daredevil, which aired on Netflix under the Marvel Television banner until 2019, was not a series that pandered to the strictly PG-13 arena of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Marvel Studios plowed ahead with their all-encompassing universe of connected stories that were open to all, Netflix’s Defenders Saga was a more grounded and mature affair, with shows like Jessica Jones and Daredevil earning a TV-MA rating, and an equivalent 16+ rating on British soil. The only exception was The Punisher, which was given a higher 18+ rating for its graphic violence. At least, the only exception until now.
The official British rating for Daredevil: Born Again is now only the second Marvel-based series to gain the 18+ rating. A first for the MCU, and coming on the back of the recently released trailer, the news has certainly put to rest any lingering doubts that the MCU are going to do the character wrong. Now, not only are they doing right by the Hell’s Kitchen vigilante, but seem to be making his return something that appeared impossible just a few years ago.
‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Has Evolved Into What Could Be Marvel’s Biggest Series

It has been a long journey for fans to finally see Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock and Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson “Kingpin” Fisk come face to face again in a whole new playground. Many times it seemed like it would never happen, and even after Kingpin’s MCU debut in Hawkeye and Murdock’s appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home, there was still plenty of doubt over how a new Daredevil project could be incorporated into the franchise.
Original plans would have seen the new iteration of Daredevil completely abandoning the Netflix show, something that didn’t sit right with fans, or, it seems, Kevin Feige. After a complete overhaul during the early stages of filming, old faces returned, storylines were reworked, and faith in Daredevil: Born Again living up to its name was restored.

Some of Daredevil’s MCU moments are more canon than others, according to showrunner Dario Scardapane.

While MCU fans will first have Captain America: Brave New World to contend with, marketing on Daredevil: Born Again has already begun, and anticipation is growing. Many are still holding out hope from some unexpected cameo appearances from other former Netflix stars, such as Krysten Ritter, who has frequently teased her desire to return to the popular role of Jessica Jones, and while there is no way of knowing what will come next for other former characters and shows of the Marvel Television era at Netflix – other than Jon Bernthal’s return as Frank Castle aka The Punisher in the new series – the path is being laid for a lot more mature comic book content being added to Marvel Studios’ roster in the coming years.
