Born Again’ Showrunner Compares New Show To ‘Sopranos’ & ‘King Of New York’

Jan 28, 2025

We have written numerous articles about the behind-the-scenes goings on with Marvel Studios’ “Daredevil: Born Again.” Long story short, the series had a complete overhaul during production with a new showrunner brought in and a change in tone and storyline. Now, the show is much closer to the Netflix “Daredevil” that ran for three seasons years ago. But that doesn’t mean ‘Born Again’ is just a retread of what Netflix did before. In fact, the showrunner said there are some pretty big differences between the two.
Speaking to SFX Magazine, Dario Scardapane talked about what’s to come with Marvel Studios’ “Daredevil: Born Again.” Specifically, he compared this new show to the Netflix predecessor. And while they both share a lot of the same DNA, the new show is much more than just a fourth season of the Netflix version.

“There is more fun in the moments with these characters and a lot less navel-gazing than before,” said Scardapane. “The earlier show, at its best, was fantastic. At its worst, it was two characters in a room talking about what a hero is. I felt that had been done. I’m not taking swipes. I just didn’t want to hear characters grousing about their lot in life. I wanted to see them doing things.”
He added, “I really feel that Netflix’s ‘Daredevil,’ which I know in my blood, was much more noir, and this show is more New York crime story. It has elements of ‘The Sopranos’ and ‘King Of New York.’ There’s a feeling for those classic ’90s crime tales. It has a pace and a scope that, for a lot of reasons, Netflix wasn’t able to do. They were very dark, cinematically, not necessarily story-wise, although there were some dark elements. We’re much darker.”

Honestly, we still don’t know all that much about “Daredevil: Born Again.” We have only seen one teaser for the show and it did a lot of teasing, not much telling. Needless to say, it seems to have struck the right chord for fans of the original Netflix show. That said, it’ll be interesting to see just how different the new show is from the older version. Will fans embrace these changes or were they really big fans of navel-gazing?
It’s also interesting to know just how much of ‘Born Again’ feels like “King of New York” and “The Sopranos.” We know Marvel Studios creators are quick to share their influences, but not all of them land once we see the content.
“Daredevil: Born Again” is set to arrive on Disney+ on March 4.
