Born Again’ Will Fix Original’s Pacing Issues & Is “Much Darker,” Says Showrunner

Feb 4, 2025

Daredevil: Born Again, the MCU’s next original Disney+ series, has promised fans it will follow the same tone and style of the beloved original Netflix series, Daredevil. But, according to showrunner Dario Scardapane, the new series will also look to improve upon one of the original Daredevil’s biggest flaws. Born Again sees Charlie Cox suit up as Matt Murdock once again, with a bunch of returning favorites like Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, Jon Bernthal as The Punisher, Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, and Elden Hensen as Foggy Nelson.
During an interview with SFX Magazine (via GamesRadar+), Dario Scardapane addressed where Born Again will differ from the original Daredevil with the aim of improving some of the original show’s shortcomings. “The earlier show, at its best, was fantastic,” Scardapane began. Very few will disagree, as Daredevil is still considered, by many, to be the greatest superhero TV series of all time. But, according to Scardapane, it wasn’t flawless. He continued:

“At its worst, it was two characters in a room talking about what a hero is. I felt that had been done. I’m not taking swipes. I just didn’t want to hear characters grousing about their lot in life. I wanted to see them doing things.”

One of the biggest ways Dario Scardapane has altered Born Again to separate it from the rest of Marvel’s Netflix canon is through the pacing. “One of our edicts was longer scenes,” he explained. “You had these long five-page scenes of characters hashing it out in order to make space between these massive action sequences. The way stuff has evolved since then, we’re able to do big action sequences at a lot more pace.”
‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Is a “New York Crime Story”

Daredevil: Born Again is, potentially, the most hyped MCU/Disney+ series to be released so far. The show premieres on March 4, and the latest trailer revealed the terrifying villains, old and new, Matt Murdock will have to overcome in the new show. As much as Born Again will honor the original series, Dario Scardapane explained that he’s taken Born Again in a new thematic direction than the original Daredevil.

Even the blind lawyer from Hell’s Kitchen knew the ‘Daredevil’ revival needed some retooling.

Scardapane said the new series will be inspired by some of the best ’90s gangster movies and shows, including the one and only, The Sopranos.

“I really feel that Netflix’s Daredevil, which I know in my blood, was much more noir, and this show is more New York crime story,” he explained. “It has elements of The Sopranos and King Of New York. There’s a feeling for those classic ’90s crime tales. It has a pace and a scope that, for a lot of reasons, Netflix wasn’t able to do. They were very dark, cinematically, not necessarily story-wise, although there were some dark elements. We’re much darker.”

Season 1 of Daredevil: Born Again hasn’t even been released yet, but Marvel Studios clearly have high hopes for the show. Born Again has already been renewed for a second season. In fact, shooting on Season 2 begins before audiences can even get their hands on Season 1.
