Both Parts Of Zack Snyder’s Upcoming Space Opera For Netflix Will Get Extended R-Rated Versions

Mar 24, 2023

Zack Snyder‘s “Rebel Moon” doesn’t premiere on Netflix until December, but nothing like some news in March to drum up hype. /Film reports that on top of Snyder’s upcoming space opera already being split into two parts, each of those parts will receive an R-rated cut, too. So, count it: technically four Zack Snyder movies worth of content upcoming, with two due at the end of the year. Obviously, there’s a fair amount of overlap in there, but Snyder’s ambition knows no bounds after “Zack Snyder’s Justice League.”

The news comes to /Film from an exclusive interview with sound mixer Andy Koyama, who also worked on “John Wick: Chapter 4,” in theaters now. Koyama revealed his extra workload on “Rebel Moon” when asked about the project. “We just did the first temp mix for the preview of part one, and it’s very exciting,” said Koyama. “It’s a big, huge, space — they probably don’t want me to say this — “Star Wars“-y, ‘rebels against the evil empire’ thing over all sorts of different worlds. It’s really fun. There’s going to be two films. I think we’re mixing that from June to February. And there’s also going to be extended R-rated versions of each of the two films, so we’re going to be mixing four different features.”
And “Rebel Moon” is indeed very “Star Wars”-y. Snyder’s latest epic follows a peaceful colony on the galaxy’s edge that sends out a mysterious woman to find warriors to face off against a tyrannical regent and his armies.  Sophia Boutella leads the space opera’s gigantic ensemble cast, including Ed Skrein as Balisarius, the Darth Vader of “Rebel Moon,” Djimon Hounsou, Michiel Huisman, Charlie Hunnam, and Anthony Hopkins. But that’s not all: “Rebel Moon” also stars Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, Staz Nair, Jena Malone, Stuart Martin, Cary Elwes, Corey Stoll, Cleopatra Coleman, and Fra Free.
Since Snyder first conceived “Rebel Moon” as a more mature take on the “Star Wars” universe, the comparisons are apt. But there’s still very little to go on for Snyder fans as the film approaches release. Still, it should satisfy most of them he’s giving the two films of this series additional cuts. And Snyder fans have had to wait a while for another project from the director: “Army Of The Dead,” which started the cordial relationship between Snyder and Netflix, premiered in Summer 2021. As for “Rebel Moon,” it debuts on Netflix on December 22, with a limited theatrical release.
