‘Breaking Bad’ Creator Vince Gilligan Reveals What Happened to Characters Since Finale

Dec 3, 2025

When Breaking Bad was first released in 2009, it continued the exciting trend of creating prestige drama and storytelling that wasn’t too common in the medium of television, similar to what David Chase had done with The Sopranos. Vince Gilligan’s television series about a high school chemistry teacher turned Drug Kingpin was so captivating and well-received that it ended up getting two spinoffs in the form of a prequel/sequel television series as well as a film. While the main cast of characters was given proper send-offs within the context of the various projects, Gillian has recently provided some amusing new details about what the characters could be up to now. During his appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, Gilligan reflected on the legacy of Breaking Bad before humorously speculating about where the characters could currently be. While various fan theories about what could have happened have floated around online, it’s much more fascinating when it is from the original creator themselves. Gilligan first talked about Bob Odenkirk’s character, Saul Goodman. By the end of the series Better Call Saul, the character is in prison, but Gilligan believes that, thanks to today’s political climate, Jimmy McGill would go free, saying: “I think Trump pardoned him. […] I think he’s out, that’s what I think, […] kinda tracks doesn’t it?” The idea of President Donald Trump pardoning the character Saul Goodman is definitely interesting, with the Breaking Bad creator believing that Jimmy went back to doing infomercials. Gilligan did stop there, either, providing quick ideas about what could have happened to various other Breaking Bad characters. As for Rhea Seehorn (who currently stars in Gilligan’s newest series Pluribus) and her character Kim Wexler, Gilligan believes that she found her passion for the law again, and has become a public defender.
Some Characters From ‘Breaking Bad’ Managed To Get a Happy Ending

In regard to the Walter White’s family, Vince Gilligan stated that Walt Jr. (RJ Mitte) is writing about his now infamous father, and Skyler White (Anna Gunn) ended up finding a better romantic partner. Given the traumatic experience that Walt brought upon his family over the course of five seasons, it’s unsurprising that Gilligan would want the surviving members of the White family to get a happy ending. As for one of the biggest supporting characters in the series, Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul), Gilligan said that he is still happy in Alaska. Written and directed by Gilligan, El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie focused exclusively on the events immediately after the series finale of Breaking Bad. The film recounts Jesse’s last attempt to escape the law and start a new life, with the character ultimately succeeding. Due to the emotional impact of the story, it’s easy to see why Gilligan would leave such a cathartic conclusion unchanged. Overall, the series creator had some amusing thoughts about the current state of the Breaking Bad characters, with his specific comments about Jimmy McGill highlighting Gilligan’s enjoyment of satirizing modern politics.
