Brie Larson And Paul Dano Join Ruben Ostlünd On The 2023 Cannes Jury

May 19, 2023

The 76th Festival de Cannes already had a jury president in two-time Palme d’Or winner Ruben Ostlünd. It now has eight more members to fill out its jury. Two of those members just happen to be Oscar winner Brie Larson and Emmy and BAFTA Award nominee Paul Dano.

The other members of the jury include another Palme d’Or winner, “Titane” director Julia Ducournau, “Wild Tales” Oscar nominee Damián Szifrón noted French actor Denis Menochet, BAFTA Award-winning filmmaker Rungano Nyoni, Moroccan director Maryam Touzani, and novelist and filmmaker Atiq Rahimi.
Unlike the 2023 jury, which was chock full of AMPAS members, the 2023 edition only includes five: Larson, Ostlünd, Dano, Touzani, and Szifrón. With both Ostlünd’s “Triangle of Sadness” and Bong Joon-ho’s “Parasite” winning both the Palme and earning Best Picture nominations (the latter winning in 2020), the jury selections have garnered more attention from awards watchers over the past few years.
This year’s in-competition class includes highly anticipated premieres including Todd Haynes’ “May December,” Karim Aïnouz‘s “Firebrand,” Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest,” Wes Anderson’s “Asteroid City,” Alice Rohrwacher’s “La Chimera,” Hirokazu Kore-eda’s “Monster” and Wim Wenders’ “Perfect Days.” Expected awards titles Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” and Peter Sohn’s “Elemental” are debuting out of the competition.
Other notable screenings out of competition include James Mangold’s “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” the Sam Levinson-directed series “The Idol” and Michel Gondry’s “The Book of Solutions” in Director’s Fortnight.
The festival previously announced the Un Certain Regard jury would be headed by John C. Reilly and include German actress Paula Beer, director Davy Chou, Belgian actress Émilie Dequenne, and French filmmaker Alice Winocour.
The 2024 Cannes Film Festival will run from May 16-27. Look for complete coverage including reviews and commentary on The Playlist.
