Chris Evans & Pedro Pascal’s New Movie Debuts With A24’s Third Best Opening Weekend
Jun 15, 2025
The new A24 movie starring Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal has set a major box office record. Both actors are well-known stars who have held prominent roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Chris Evans played Steve Rogers, also known as Captain America, in multiple installments of the superhero franchise spanning from 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger through 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. He also reprised his Fantastic Four role as Johnny Storm, the Human Torch, in a surprise cameo for 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine. While Pedro Pascal has not yet appeared in the MCU, he plays Reed Richards, also known as Mister Fantastic, in the upcoming The Fantastic Four: First Steps. He is already a prominent actor, however, having held roles in a number of notable hits. After his breakout role as Oberyn Martell in HBO’s Game of Thrones, he went on to play DEA agent Javier Peña in Netflix’s Narcos before taking on major lead roles as Din Djarin in the Disney+ Star Wars spinoff series The Mandalorian and Joel Miller in HBO’s post-apocalyptic video game adaptation The Last of Us.
Materialists’ Opening Weekend Is One Of A24’s Best
It Also Hit A Major Milestone
Materialists is performing remarkably well during its debut weekend. The new A24 romance movie, from Past Lives writer-director Celine Song, stars Chris Evans as cater waiter John and Pedro Pascal as financier Harry Castillo, both of whom are vying for the heart of matchmaker Lucy (Dakota Johnson, who is also a Marvel veteran, having starred in the Sony’s Spider-Man Universe outing Madame Web). The Materialists theatrical release kicked off on June 13, on the same day as the live-action How to Train Your Dragon remake.
Materialists also stars Marin Ireland, Zoë Winters, Louisa Jacobson, Dasha Nekrasova, Sawyer Spielberg, and John Magaro.
Per Deadline, as of Saturday morning, Materialists is projected to earn a 3-day debut gross of $12 million at the domestic box office by the end of its opening weekend. In addition to making it the 52nd movie of the year to pass the $10 million domestic milestone within just three days, this total marks the third-best opening weekend for an A24 movie. The only two titles that are ahead of it are Ari Aster’s breakout horror hit Hereditary ($13.5 million) and Alex Garland’s dystopian thriller Civil War ($25.5 million).
What This Means For Materialists
It Could Continue To Make A Splash
Because A24 opens many of their movies in limited release before making wide expansions, this record does not necessarily mean that Materialists will automatically become the third highest-grossing A24 movie of all time. However, Hereditary is their fourth highest-grossing and Civil War is their second, with Talk to Me at No. 3 and Everything Everywhere All At Once at No. 1. Therefore, a position in the A24 Top 5 is entirely possible, while a position in the Top 10 seems like a near guarantee, if the new movie continues on its current trajectory.
