Marvel star Chris Hemsworth continues to rail somewhat against superhero roles while discussing playing the villainous Warlord Dementus in this year’s Mad Max prequel, Furiosa. Speaking with EW, Hemsworth stated that, besides working with acclaimed director George Miller, he relished the chance to “dirty it up and to be messy and ugly and violent and chaotic.” Continuing, Hemsworth criticized the “rules” that he must follow as an actor when playing a superhero, and called described such roles as “being in the somewhat predictable box of the hero in a superhero space.”
“There’s a whole lot of rules that you have to stick to [with that]. With this, I could throw that out the window, which was nice.”

Hemsworth is now best recognized for his superhero role as Thor in the MCU, a role that he has been playing since the first Thor outing back in 2011. While many of the original MCU guard have now left the franchise, including Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr. and Captain America actor Chris Evans, there is talk of a fifth Thor movie for Hemsworth, who is also expected to fight alongside The Avengers in Avengers 5 in 2026 and Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027.
Chris Hemsworth Now Hates Wearing Capes
The role of Thor often requires Hemsworth to don a large, red cape. And it’s something he is now pretty tired of. Asked whether he finds capes “annoying,” Hemsworth quickly replied, “Hate ’em. So impractical.” Despite his aversion to capes, the actor will don one once again in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. But, while this latest cape bears a striking resemblance to the one he sports as the Marvel Asgardian, Hemsworth says that this was not “intentional.”
“Yeah, it was a real departure, and it was nice. … I was about to say it was nice not to wear a cape, but… I did have a cape in this film. And it’s red — or it becomes red eventually, as well. The absurdity of that.
It’s not intentional to be a comparison of Thor, but I found a wonderful departure to it — to play the villain, transform, and inhabit a completely different physicality was a lot of fun. I loved it. And it was the real attraction.”

Hemsworth has been down on his role as Thor of late, with the actor recently admitting that he still has not forgiven himself for the divisive MCU outing, Thor: Love and Thunder.
“I got caught up in the improv and the wackiness, and I became a parody of myself. I didn’t stick the landing.”
One of his Marvel co-stars has quickly leaped to his defense, however, with Robert Downey Jr. heaping praise on both Hemsworth’s performance and the character’s arc throughout the franchise.
“He’s got wit and gravitas, but also such restraint, fire and gentleness…Thor as a character was super tricky to adapt — lots of implied limitations — but he and Ken Branagh figured out how to transcend, make him somehow relatable but godlike.”
Directed by George Miller,
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
