Chris Pratt Breaks Down Chance of MCU Return and Joining James Gunn’s DCU
May 14, 2024
Summary
Chris Pratt is optimistic about a potential return as Star-Lord in the MCU and a potential role in James Gunn’s DCU movies.
Fans speculate where Star-Lord fits in the post-
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
split-up, teasing his legendary return.
Pratt’s full schedule includes voicework for Mario and Garfield among other projects.
Chris Pratt certainly has plenty of roles under his belt to not need to worry about where his next paycheck comes from, but the Guardians of the Galaxy star clearly has some unfinished business as Star-Lord in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The question is when he will make his next appearance in the saga – especially with the franchise reducing its output – and in that matter, Pratt is being optimistically vague.
While speaking to ComicBook.com as he promoted his upcoming turn as Garfield in Illumination’s latest animated offering, Pratt was asked when fans can expect to see him back in his galaxy-defending role, or if he is likely to pop up in James Gunn’s upcoming DCU movies first. He replied:
“Well, it probably makes more sense that I would be Star Lord again. But anything is possible, and especially with James over at DC. Maybe there’s something that would be right over there. Maybe both. How about both? Let’s do both. I think it’s 100% both.”
Guardians of the Galaxy Release Date July 30, 2014 Runtime 121 Tagline When things get bad, they’ll do their worst.
When taking over the DCU franchise, James Gunn made it clear that he would be more than happy to work with all the Guardians of the Galaxy stars again at some point in the future. While there have been plenty of whispers about various stars such as Karen Gillan, Dave Bautista, and Pom Klementieff all being in the running for roles, it is certainly possible that Pratt already has a part earmarked for him in Gunn’s franchise reboot.
How Will Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord Return to the MCU?
Following the conclusion of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, fans are speculating about Star-Lord’s next appearance in the MCU. The film ended with the existing Guardians team being split up as they all went their separate ways. Rocket and Groot formed a new team, which now includes Adam Warlock, Kraglin, Cosmo, and Phyla, Gamora left with the Ravagers, Nebula became ward of Knowhere, Mantis set off on a voyage of personal discovery, and Drax became father to the star children. Meanwhile, Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, returns home to his family on Earth. However, the post-credits scene ended with the teasing line that “The Legendary Star-Lord will return.”
The single line of text appeared to be setting up Pratt’s next appearance, which could take inspiration from the comic book of the same name. The Legendary Star-Lord was a solo adventure of Quill’s, and while this would be a very different dynamic to the character’s ensemble appearances in the MCU, it would also perhaps lean into something that Marvel Studios are looking to do more of in the future. While the Multiverse Saga’s path has already been set, what comes next will involve a reduced output, and that could mean more individual stories and shorter “sagas.”

While Pratt is very much onboard with both returning as Star-Lord and potentially joining the DCU, he is also now the voice of Mario in Illumination’s Nintendo universe, and of Garfield in the upcoming reboot of the adventures of the lasagne-loving feline. Throw in his Amazon series The Terminal List, and Pratt has a pretty full dance card for the foreseeable.
