Christopher Nolan, Yorgos Lanthimos And Gerta Gerwig Earn 2024 DGA Awards Nominations

Jan 17, 2024

The Directors Guild of America unveiled their final nominees for the 76th DGA Awards and there were few surprises. Making the cut were Christopher Nolan (“Oppenheimer”), Greta Gerwig (“Barbie”), Yorgos Lanthimos (“Poor Things”), Martin Scorsese (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) and Alexander Payne (“The Holdovers”). Out of this year’s nominees, only Scorsese has previously won a DGA honor or the Academy Award for Best Director.

The five directors nominated by the DGA rarely line up completely with the preferences of the Academy’s decidedly smaller Directors branch. The last time both voting groups matched up was in 2010. That being said, the winner of the DGA honor is often a precursor to the eventual Oscar winner. The last time there was a discrepancy was in 2013 when Ben Affleck won the DGA Award for “Argo” after being snubbed by his Academy peers. This is good news for Justin Triet (“Anatomy of a Fall”), Bradley Cooper (“Maestro”), Celine Song (“Past Lives”), and Jonathan Glazer (“The Zone of Interest”), who are all hoping to crack Oscar’s directing five.
In the First Time Feature Film category, the nominees are Cord Jefferson (“American Fiction”), Manuela Martelli (“Chile ’76”), Noora Niasari (“Shayda”), A.V. Rockwell (“A Thousand and One”) and the aforementioned Song.
The documentary and television nominees were revealed yesterday.
The DGA Awards will be handed out on February 10.
