Despite rumors that Daniel Craig would star in DC Studios’ Sgt. Rock, the actor is no longer attached to the project. Sgt. Rock was set to be a Queer reunion as Luca Guadagnino would reteam with former James Bond star Craig, and Justin Kuritzkes would pen the script. However, Warner Bros., DC Studios, and director Luca Guadagnino might have their eyes set on the star of The Bear to lead their upcoming film, which could enter production sooner than expected.
The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Craig is no longer attached to star in Sgt. Rock. No details were given on why he seemingly departed the project, though the Hollywood Reporter notes it might have been scheduling conflicts, while sources have alleged Craig might have lost interest after Queer bombed at the box office and failed to score an Academy Awards recognition. The search is on for a new actor, with Jeremy Allen White, the star of the hit Hulu series The Bear, reportedly being eyed for the lead role.
Sgt. Rock was created by writer Robert Kanigher and artist Joe Kubert and debuted Our Army at War #81 in April 1959. He is the leader of Easy Company, a WWII unit that was previously shown in Creature Commandos as the military unit the character G.I. Robot served. That series marked the first appearance of Sgt. Rock in the DCU before his upcoming feature film. Warner Bros. attempted to make a Sgt. Rock movies at various points during the 1980s and 1990s, with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis once considered for the lead role. Between Craig and now, Jeremy Allen White is considered to play Sgt. Rock suggests a very different depiction of the character.
‘Sgt. Rock’ is Being Fast-Tracked

The Hollywood Reporter also noted that Sgt. Rock is looking to begin filming this summer in the United Kingdom. This gives credibility to the rumor that Sgt. Rock might be the Untitled DC Studios film that Warner Bros. has slated for release on May 29, 2026. If this is the case, that would make Sgt. Rock the second film in the DCU, opening one month before Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. That would also give Sgt. Rock the shortest turnaround time between DC projects as Superman and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow started filming over a year before their release dates. Casting for Sgt. Rock will certainly be picking up in the coming months if it plans to meet that summer 2026 release date.

If Sgt. Rock is released on May 29, 2026, and Jeremy Allen White is cast in the lead role. The actor would have two films released back-to-back. The actor is currently set to voice Rotta the Hutt in The Mandalorian & Grogu, which opens on May 22, 2026, and is the first Star Wars film to hit theaters since The Rise of Skywalker back in 2019. Allen has won three Golden Globes and two Emmys for his role as Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto on The Bear, and he is next set to appear as rocker Bruce Springsteen in the biographical Deliver Me From Nowhere, so director Luca Guadagnino is still aiming for a critically acclaimed actor to anchor his DC World War II-era movie. As for Craig, he and Guadagnino’s film Queer will be streaming on Max in March 2025.
