May 31, 2023
With heavyweights like “Succession” and “Barry” concluded, many have asked on social media, what’s the best show on HBO now? The answer that has come up a lot lately is maybe an unexpected one in “The Righteous Gemstones,” the televangelist family comedy from filmmakers Danny McBride, Jody Hill, and David Gordon Green, the producers and creative team that brought you HBO’s “Eastbound & Down” and “Vice Principals.”

Now in its third season, HBO has released the official trailer for the series, which debuts with two episodes on Sunday, June 18, on HBO and MAX.
Created, written, and executive produced by Danny McBride, the comedian also stars in the series too and he’s becoming a Bill Hader type that is exclusively in creative control of his show.
The returning cast includes Adam Devine as Kelvin Gemstone, John Goodman as Eli Gemstone, Edi Patterson as Judy Gemstone, Cassidy Freeman as Amber Gemstone, Tim Baltz as BJ, Tony Cavalero as Keefe Chambers, Greg Alan Williams as Martin Imari, and Skyler Gisondo as Gideon Gemstone.
Returning recurring cast includes Walton Goggins as Baby Billy Freeman, Jennifer Nettles as Aimee-Leigh Gemstone, James DuMont as Chad, Jody Hill as Levi, Troy Anthony Hogan as Matthew, Valyn Hall as Tiffany Freeman, Kelton DuMont as Pontious Gemstone and Gavin Munn as Abraham Gemstone.
Here’s the season three synopsis:
THE RIGHTEOUS GEMSTONES tells the story of a world-famous televangelist family with a long tradition of deviance, greed, and charitable work. When the spoiled Gemstone children finally get their wish to take control of the Church, they discover leadership is harder than they imagined and that their extravagant lifestyle comes with a heavy price.
New cast members for season three include Steve Zahn as Peter Montgomery, Stephen Dorff as Vance Simkins, Shea Whigham as Dusty Daniels, Kristen Johnston as May-May, Lukas Haas as Chuck, Robert Oberst as Karl, Stephen Schneider as Stephen, Iliza Shlesinger as Shay Marigold, Sturgill Simpson as Marshall, and Casey Wilson as Kristy.
“Righteous Gemstones” is already critically acclaimed, so “new best show on HBO”? Maybe season three will seal the deal on that posit starting on June 18.
