Daredevil Born Again Will Be Closely Tied to the Netflix Series

Aug 24, 2024

According to the cast of Daredevil: Born Again, the new series will closely tie into the beloved original show despite being set in a new universe. Daredevil: Born Again (titled after the acclaimed comic book by Frank Miller) is finally giving Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) a standalone series in the MCU. Murdock, a.k.a. Daredevil, first appeared in the Marvel/Netflix series Daredevil in 2015, which ran for three seasons. The character then made his MCU debut in Spider-Man: No Way Home and reemerged in Marvel Studios’ Disney+ shows She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and Echo. Now that Daredevil is finally getting his own show in the MCU, fans are worried that the series will retcon and ignore the original series, but the show’s cast is setting those fears at ease.

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, the cast discussed working on Daredevil: Born Again, which has now officially wrapped shooting. Cox, Vincent D’Onofrio, Jon Bernthal, Deborah Ann Woll, and Elden Henson teased the new show and reminisced about their time working on the original series. While Daredevil: Born Again takes the character in a new direction in the MCU, D’Onofrio assured fans that the new show will incorporate plot lines from the character’s time under the Netflix banner. The actor said:

“There are storylines that reach back to the original series. Where our characters are coming from, where we are, and where we’re going, some of those threads lead back.”

According to Charlie Cox, ‘rebooting’ Daredevil in the MCU was a unique challenge for showrunner Dario Scardapane and the writing staff. The show incorporates plot threads and themes from the original, but it was important that Daredevil: Born Again didn’t feel too constrained by feeling like an unofficial fourth season of Daredevil. Cox explained:

“But at the same time, it can be an enemy, because that is the stuff that’s left behind you as you go forward, and then you’re tied to it. I felt like the writers and Dario did a really amazing job at finding a way for us to have our history, to have our connections, but not dwelling on it so much that you are tied to it the whole time.”

Daredevil: Born Again Features Numerous Props From the Original Show

Spotting Easter eggs in Marvel Studios movies and shows has become a uniquely exciting sport for comic book fans. Since Jon Favreau’s Iron Man, the MCU has been littered with numerous blink-and-you’ll-miss-it Easter eggs for fans to discover after multiple re-watches. Daredevil: Born Again will be no different. During the conversation, Charlie Cox revealed a scene in Daredevil: Born Again that shows Murdock and Karen Page (Woll) rummaging through a box of their old belongings, which features many props from the original Daredevil. He explained:

“Deborah and I had a scene where we find an old box — am I allowed to say that? I think I can say that. We had a scene where we were looking through a box and we find stuff from the past, and it was real stuff from the past. It was stuff from the old [show]. It was like a photo frame we used on a set eight years ago and we were looking at it together — well, I wasn’t looking at it. But we were reminiscing over it, and it was sweet. It was kind of a little bit of life imitating art.”

The first official trailer for Daredevil: Born Again was revealed at Marvel Studios’ D23 panel. The trailer has yet to be officially released online, but leaked footage has left fans losing their minds on social media. The trailer showcases the returning cast of characters, new suits for Daredevil, and the introduction of a terrifying Marvel Comics villain, Muse.

Daredevil: Born Again
debuts on Disney+ in March 2025.
