Dave Bautista Wants a Role in James Gunn’s DC Universe
Feb 13, 2025
Dave Bautista is no stranger to blockbuster franchises, and the Guardians of the Galaxy star has sights set on another universe to conquer with his charisma. “I do love working with James [Gunn], and I’ve been very vocal about wanting to work with him at DC,” Bautista tells MovieWeb. “If they find a character that makes sense for me, then I’d totally be open to it.”
The most recent project on Bautista’s busy slate is In the Lost Lands, an adaptation of a short story by Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin. Bautista plays Boyce, something of a cross between a cowboy and a monster-hunter in a post-apocalyptic dark fantasy universe.

Take dark magic, fearsome monsters, two action icons, and George R.R. Martin and you could have something special.
Bautista’s Drax characterization arguably stole the show a number of times in the star-studded MCU entries, courtesy of his collaboration with James Gunn. It’s easy to imagine Bautista finding his way into the reimagined DC-verse, which kicks off this year with Superman. Bautista continues to make his desire to re-team with Gunn known, telling MovieWeb:
“I’ve reached out on several occasions just to voice my interest. And it’s just one of those things, it was same with Marvel, they kind of have their slate. They kind of know the direction they’re going in, and I’m just speaking for myself, not something that James has told me, but I think just from watching what they’re doing, I think they’re just rebuilding the whole brand, and they’re starting, obviously, with a young cast, so they have somewhere to go.”
Where Does Dave Bautista See Himself Fitting Into the DC Universe?
Dave Bautista has a pretty clear idea of how he’d like to find his way into the DC universe, and given how busy his slate is, it makes sense that he’d want his entrance to pack a punch:
“I don’t know what character I would fit in [as],” says Bautista. “I’d rather not just take a supporting role in a DC film that was kind of dropped in, maybe not make it through the film, you know, maybe just be a smaller supporting role… I’d rather hold off and just be in a bigger role, something that would just make more of an impact in that universe, because I do love it.”
There are countless DC characters to explore on the big screen, and if recent Superman trailers are any indication, James Gunn and his team intend to feature many of them. Where does Bautista fit into it all? Only time will tell, but we know the interest and desire exist.
