With Jason Momoa set to re-join the DC Universe as a brand-new character in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, some fans are getting over-excited and hoping for a standalone Lobo movie. One such fan is beloved action director David Leitch, who wants to helm Momoa’s prospective standalone film. Leitch is a former stunt performer turned director. While his stunt work ranges from action classics like the Bourne franchise to the bizarre comedy Movie 43, Leitch is best known as the director of Bullet Train, Deadpool 2, and Atomic Blonde. He was also the uncredited co-director of John Wick.
Jason Momoa broke the Lobo casting news on Instagram, sharing a typed-up quote from a past interview where he expressed his love for the DC character, with the caption reading, “They called.” The comments were filled with tons of positive messages, including some from his new DC cast mates like Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl in Superman), and James Gunn himself. Leitch also shared his love for Momoa and Lobo, while sneakily pitching his next move. Leitch wrote:

“Let’s do a Lobo feature”

So far, Lobo has only been confirmed to appear in the upcoming Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which will star Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El and is being directed by Craig Gillespie. Momoa is the fourth confirmed cast member of Supergirl, alongside Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, and the aforementioned Alcock. Considering how beloved and strong a character Lobo is in the DC Comics canon, he is expected to return in multiple DC projects… although nothing has been announced.

Fan castings rarely get things right. Sometimes the actor doesn’t fit the role, and others have absolutely no desire to take on a superhero movie (like Cillian Murphy as Doctor Doom). But, every now and again, the stars align and fans and studios see eye-to-eye. Fans have been dreamcasting Jason Momoa as Lobo for years, due in part to the actor’s physicality, but also his own love for the character. Although it’s still early, it seems DC Studios has been spot-on with casting their new cinematic universe thus far.
Lobo will be Momoa’s second DC Universe character in his career. He previously played Arthur Curry, a.k.a. Aquaman, in Justice League and two standalone Aquaman movies. While Momoa achieved the impossible task of somehow making Aquaman cool, it’s safe to say he made the character fit around his own personality, rather than conforming to the comic book origins of the character. However, Lobo is a completely different matter.

In DC Comics canon, Lobo is an intergalactic, motorcycle-riding mercenary with a filthy mouth and barely a care in the world. Sound like anyone familiar? Anyone who follows Momoa on social media or YouTube will instantly connect the dots between the character and the actor. His loud, joyous personality is always front and center in interviews and public appearances. All you need to do is paint his skin gray, give him a flying motorcycle, and he’s literally Lobo (he probably already has his signature chained hook, too).
