DCU Batman Project The Brave and the Bold Will Follow Bruce Wayne and His Son

Apr 17, 2023

The DCU will bring another all-new Batman to the big screen in The Brave and the Bold, a DCU project centered on Batman and Robin. Revealed by James Gunn, The Brave and the Bold will exist completely separately from director Matt Reeves The Batman universe starring Robert Pattinson, and will focus on Bruce Wayne and his son Damian, as well as introducing the wider “Bat family.”

Gunn went on to describe Damian Wayne, who will have become the latest Robin in the movie, as “our favorite Robin,” as well as “a little son of a bitch,” an “assassin” and a “murderer.” Which certainly sounds a lot like the Damian Wayne DC fans know from the pages of the comics.

For those unaware, Damian Wayne is the biological son of Bruce Wayne and Talia al Ghul, the daughter of supervillain Ra’s al Ghul. Bruce is not told about his offspring until Damian has been alive for 10 years of his life, meaning that he has been influenced solely by his mother, grandfather and their League of Assassins ways. “It’s a very strange sort of father-son story about the two of them,” Gunn said of the project.

It has also been revealed that The Brave and the Bold will indeed be based on the run by writer Grant Morrison, with Gunn revealing that Morrison will be “exceptionally influential” on the DCU as a whole.

Robin has not been seen on the big screen since the critically mauled Batman and Robin back in 1997, but it sounds like Gunn and Safran have a very different plan for how to bring the sidekick to life.

James Gunn Knows Not Everyone Will Be Happy with His DCU Plans

DC Comics

The DC Cinematic Universe has been a hotbed of drama behind-the-scenes from very early on, and finding the right people to take charge of the franchise was reportedly no easy task. According to insiders, the “whole town” turned down the job before Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn and producer Peter Safran decided to take hold of the opportunity.

Of course, Gunn knows exactly what he is walking into, with the director recently stating that he knows not everyone will be happy with the decisions he and Safran take. “We know we are not going to make every single person happy every step of the way, but we can promise everything we do is done in the service of the STORY & in the service of the DC CHARACTERS we know you cherish and we have cherished our whole lives,” Gunn said of taking over the DCU.

At the same time, Gunn is confident in what he and Safran have planned, promising to give the DCU and the iconic character within it the time and attention that they deserve. “As for more answers about the future of the DCU, I will sadly have to ask you to wait. We are giving these characters & the stories the time & attention they deserve & we ourselves still have a lot more questions to ask & answer,” he added.
