DCU Fans Got Some Disappointing News for Comic-Con 2025
Mar 4, 2025
DC fans visiting San Diego Comic-Con might want to keep their expectations in check as there might not be any big DCU news or events, according to Peter Safran.
Comic-Con 2024 was seen as a big return to form for various studios after the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes impacted the previous year. While Marvel Studios notably had a significant presence at Comic-Con 2024, breaking the internet with the announcement that Robert Doweny Jr. would be playing Doctor Doom, DC Studios sat out the big event. Aside from revealing the DC Studios logo and showing the first teaser for Creature Commandos, there was no significant Hall H presence for Superman or other DCU titles.
That trend will seemingly continue in 2025. During a press conference on the state of the DCU slate, Variety reports that DC Studios co-president Peter Safran said that the studio will not have a “significant presence” at San Diego Comic-Con 2025, so fans should not hold out hope for a big Hall H presence. James Gunn’s Superman opens two weeks before Comic-Con starts on July 24, 2025, which doesn’t leave DC Studios with much to promote.

Safran’s statement about a “significant presence” still implies there will be some smaller DCU-related announcements, but as of this moment nothing has been confirmed. While this might rule out a casting announcement for Sgt. Rock or Clayface, there is a chance audiences might get a sneak peek at one of the planned Krypto shorts or possibly some more details about the slew of animated series in development.
This news also doesn’t rule out non-DCU projects. The Penguin, part of Matt Reeves’s The Batman franchise, appeared in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con in 2024 to debut a trailer. There could also be news regarding a new season of My Adventures With Superman or Harley Quinn.
DCU Comic-Con
While fans were disappointed by the lack of Superman material at San Diego Comic-Con 2024, many also understood that it was still filming, and it might have been a bit much to stop production to promote the movie at Comic-Con. However, there are more DC films in production with promotional material to tease fans with at Comic-Con, should DC Studios want to participate. Peacemaker Season 2, Lanterns, and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow likely all have material that could be shown to an audience at Comic-Con.
DC Studios’ decision to largely forgo Comic-Con speaks to a larger industry trend of studios moving away from the annual convention. While it is still a major news source, in recent years, Comic-Con has primarily focused on television series. Marvel Studios still pulls out all the stops for Comic-Con, but many other studios have started to scale back their Comic-Con presence since the investment in marketing for the event doesn’t always equate to box office success. For every Iron Man and The Avengers, there is a Cowboys & Aliens, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, or Tron: Legacy, where Comic-Con enthusiasm doesn’t always translate to box office gold.
DC originally seemed to pivot away from Comic-Con in favor of DC FanDome, which took off during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the second attempt failed to take off, and future plans were scrapped. Now, DC Studios announces and reveals projects the old-fashioned way, through press events. It might not be as showy as Marvel’s events, but there is a clear plan for the film’s marketing campaigns, as seen with the lead-up to the first Superman trailer.
