Marketing for
Deadpool & Wolverine
embraces its R-rating with swearing, sexual references, and a unique popcorn bucket design.

It should come as no surprise to MCU fans, especially considering the amount of blood and swearing in the trailers, but Deadpool & Wolverine has officially been given an R-rating ahead of its release in July. As Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) hack and slash their way into the MCU, they’ll be swearing their way right through the film’s runtime. In the words of Wolverine from the first trailer: “Let’s f*cking go!”

With the film’s release fast approaching, the MPA (Motion Picture Association) announced in a bulletin that Deadpool & Wolverine officially has an R-rating making it the first MCU movie to breach PG-13 territory. Fans will be delighted to hear thact the new movie features “strong bloody violence and language throughout” with the addition of “gore and sexual references.” Audiences were skeptical when Marvel Studios announced Deadpool would be joining the MCU, believing his foul mouth would be toned down to appease the Disney overlords. But there’s no going back now.

Thankfully, the plan was always to make Deadpool & Wolverine an R-rated adventure. It seems that the film’s embrace of lewd swearing is a sentiment now shared by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. During a presentation at CinemaCon, Feige took to the stage after showcasing 9 minutes of footage from the film. During the presentation, the usually professional executive let the moment get the better of him when he declared the film as “f*cking awesome!” before justifying his reaction because the film is R-rated.

Deadpool & Wolverine’s Marketing Has Embraced Its R-Rating

Despite only being made official recently, Deadpool & Wolverine’s marketing has been banking on an R-rating since the film’s conception. The Red Band trailer features countless swearing, references to numerous sexual acts, and a lot of cocaine jokes. Deadpool & Wolverine will also preview a new anti-cellphone PSA where Wolverine looses his cool in the audience after phones interrupt his spoiler-filled conversation about Avengers: Secret Wars.

If that wasn’t enough, Ryan Reynolds has pushed risque marketing to a new level. Following the accidental sexualization of Dune Part Two’s sandworm popcorn bucket, Reynolds announced that Deadpool & Wolverine will also produce a new popcorn bucket for the film’s release, and it’ll make Dune’s look tame by comparison. Well, it does. Reynolds revealed the new bucket on social media and got fans a little too excited about watching the movie with their very own Wolverine. Featuring Wolverine’s iconic yellow mask, the popcorn bucket boasts an open mouth with a tongue where the popcorn is stored.

Despite all of that, Ryan Reynolds was actually surprised that Marvel Studios let them proceed with an R-rated movie. In a recent interview, Reynolds labeled the decision as a “huge step” for Marvel Studios. So far, the MCU has only featured one f-bomb (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3), so Deadpool & Wolverine will open the MCU to new vulgar territory. He continued:

“I was surprised though that they let us go as Hard R… but very grateful. I mean, there’s no other way to do it.”

Deadpool & Wolverine
swears its way into theaters on July 26, 2024.
