Denzel Washington Endorsed for Mangeto MCU Role by Michael Fassbender
Mar 24, 2025
Denzel Washington has been in the running for an MCU role for quite some time, and while it appears his debut will be made in the upcoming Black Panther sequel, it could be as a mutant. Ryan Coogler is currently developing a character for Washington to play, and many have speculated it could be the classic villain of the X-Men. It helps that the longtime favorite to portray Magneto for Marvel Studios just got a pretty resounding endorsement by a former X-Men actor.
During an interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast for his spy thriller Black Bag, Michael Fassbender was asked about passing the torch to a new Magneto actor in the MCU. “I think it’s great, I’m excited to see who does it,” the actor started. But when asked about Washington potentially picking up the mantle, Fassbender made it quite clear that an actor of that caliber wouldn’t even need a baton passed to them. It’s all just a rumor, but Fassbender is more than down for that outcome.
“[Denzel Washington] as Magneto? I mean, brilliant, he’s a heavyweight. I don’t even think I could pass the baton [laughs]. He’s incredible!”

Denzel Washington is a violent force of justice in the beloved movie series.
Fassbender, who is not expected to reprise his role in the MCU as Magneto, portrayed the character Erik Lehnsherr in the following films: X-Men: First Class, X-Men: Apocalypse, X-Men: Days of Future Past, and Dark Phoenix. He was the younger version of Ian McKellen’s Magneto, who made his supervillain debut in the 2000 X-Men film. And while Patrick Stewart was able to play a variant of Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, there has been no indication that Fassbender or McKellen will reprise their respective roles in either Avengers: Doomsday or Secret Wars, although the latter seems possible.
Is Denzel Washington Confirmed for ‘Black Panther 3’?
Disney
Although Denzel Washington let it slip that Ryan Coogler was writing a role for him in the Black Panther sequel, it has not been confirmed by Marvel Studios. Longtime Marvel producer Nate Moore previously commented on the Washington situation, revealing that it was their intention to include him in the MCU film. However, who he plays and how significant the role will be has yet to be determined, partly because of Coogler finishing up his R-rated vampire flick, Sinners.
“If that manifests, which we’re gonna try, I think it will probably be somebody from canon. Who that is, is early days. We honestly haven’t had really substantive creative conversations with Ryan, mostly because he’s finishing his film ‘Sinners,’ which is gonna come out this year and is gonna be great. So again it’s too early to say, but obviously if an actor of the caliber of Denzel Washington wants in, we’re gonna figure out a way to make that happen.”
As Moore notes, if the studio sees that Washington interested in making the leap to the superhero genre, then they must do whatever they can to make it happen. Whether he is playing Magneto or another Black Panther-related character, Washington would be a welcome face in the MCU. That said, it may not be a coincidence that Namor, a mutant, made his MCU debut in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
