Denzel Washington’s Next Movie Wraps Filming With BTS Image
Jun 4, 2024
Summary
Filming has wrapped on
High and Low
, a new collaboration between Denzel Washington and Spike Lee.
The film is a remake of a 1963 thriller of the same name from director Akira Kurosawa.
High and Low
appears to be most similar to Lee and Washington’s
Inside Man
in the sense that it’s a more straightforward genre movie.
High and Low starring Denzel Washington has just wrapped filming, a new behind-the-scenes images confirms. Directed by Spike Lee, with whom Washington has now collaborated five times, High and Low serves as a remake of a 1963 Akira Kurosawa thriller of the same name. The original movie tells the story of a shoe company executive who contends with an attempt at extortion after his chauffeur’s son is kidnapped and held for ransom. Lee’s High and Low remake started filming earlier this year with Washington in the lead role.
Now, Lee posts a new photo on Instagram, confirming that filming has now been completed on High and Low. Check out the director’s post below:
“This Past Friday We Officially Wrapped DA New Spike Joint Starring My Brother Mr. DENZEL WASHINGTON,” Lee writes in his caption. “This Picture Is Of Our Hardworking Talented Cast And Crew,” he continues, “I Thank You All.”
High and Low
also stars Jeffrey Wright, Ice Spice, Ilfenesh Hadera, Jeremy Sample.
How Will High & Low Compare To Past Lee & Washington Collaborations?
Why Their New Movie Might Be A Bit Different
In order of release, the previous four collaborations between Lee and Washington include: Mo’ Better Blues (1990), Malcolm X (1992), He Got Game (1998), and Inside Man (2006). All of these films have been quite different, each exploring different genres and types of characters, challenging both actor and director in different ways. As seen in the chart below, each of these collaborations has also been generally well-received by critics and audiences, suggesting that High and Low will continue this same trend.
Title Rotten Tomatoes Critics’ Score Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score Mo’ Better Blues (1990) 71% 75% Malcom X (1992) 88% 91% He Got Game (1998) 80% 83% Inside Man (2006) 86% 85%
In contrast to some of Lee and Washington’s previous movies together, High and Low appears to be more of a straight genre film. Kurosawa’s movie fits fairly neatly in the crime thriller space, featuring many now-hallmarks of the genre. Inside Man, a heist thriller, is probably the closest to High and Low, in this respect, with that film following Washington’s detective as he deals with a bank robbery that becomes a hostage situation.
In contrast to Inside Man, however, Washington’s character in High and Low will seemingly not be law enforcement. Nothing’s been confirmed just yet, but Washington will presumably be playing the role of the shoe company executive who finds himself the target of an extortion scheme, an interesting new role for the actor. It remains to be seen how High and Low will compare to Lee and Washington’s past movies together, but it evidently has the makings of being an interesting departure.
