Despicable Me 4 Streaming Release Date Revealed After $953M Box Office Success
Oct 1, 2024
Despicable Me 4 now has a streaming release date after dominating in theaters this summer. Directed by Chris Renaud, the fourth installment in Illumination’s Despicable Me franchise follows Gru (Steve Carell) as he faces off against new rival Maxime Le Mal (Will Ferrell) while also dealing with the arrival of the baby Gru Jr. Reviews for Despicable Me 4 were mixed from critics, but the film, which also features voice acting from Kristen Wiig, Sofía Vergara, and Joey King, was a box office success, grossing over $953 million worldwide.
ComicBook.com now reveals that Despicable Me 4 will start streaming on Peacock on October 31, meaning audiences still have about a month to wait. This streaming release date comes nearly two months after the film first became available on VOD. The film will be joining both Despicable Me (2010) and Despicable Me 2 (2013) on Peacock, with Despicable Me 3 (2017) streaming instead on Fubo.
What Despicable Me 4’s Box Office Success Means For Its Streaming Popularity
Why The Film Will Probably Be A Hit At Home
Despicable Me 4’s $953 million box office, which comprises $360.7 million domestic and $592.5 million internationally, affirms that a lackluster critics’ response doesn’t deter audiences when it comes to this franchise. The film currently has a 56% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, and this score is in line with Despicable Me 3’s 58%, and that film currently stands as the second-highest-grossing entry in the franchise behind Minions (2015). The latest Gru adventure earned an 88% audience score, speaking to the enduring love for the franchise from general movie-goers.
The fact that anything in the Despicable Me/ Minions franchise tends to play well in theaters means the latest installment will probably be a hit at home. It also means Peacock could experience a bump in subscriber growth, especially since the service has two other popular entries in the franchise that can keep younger or family home viewers entertained.
Our Take On Despicable Me 4’s Success
The New Film Has Only Affirmed Illumination’s Animation Dominance
Despicable Me 4 was so successful in theaters that Minions 3 is confirmed to be on the way. There’s been no official word yet on a potential Despicable Me 5, but the continued popularity of the franchise suggests that another outing for Gru is likely.
The Despicable Me and Minions films may not be breaking the mold in terms of their storytelling or exploration of meaningful themes, but it’s clear that there’s joy to be had with the franchise’s silliness, bright colors, and child-friendly humor. Illumination seems to have this formula down pat, and Despicable Me 4 has only solidified the studio’s hold over the current animated movie landscape after the success of previous entries in the franchise and other titles like The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023).
