Directors Of ‘Minari,’ ‘Spider-Verse’ & More Helming Episodes In Season 3

Jan 17, 2023

Last night, Disney and Lucasfilm unveiled the latest trailer for “The Mandalorian” Season 3. Though many people just were excited to see the new footage from the upcoming batch of episodes, the studio went further and announced the list of directors who worked on the season. Much like previous seasons, the names include some familiar faces but some exciting new additions, as well.

According to Lucasfilm, “The Mandalorian” Season 3 will feature eight total episodes directed by folks including Rick Famuyiwa, Rachel Morrison, Lee Isaac Chung, Carl Weathers, Peter Ramsey, and Bryce Dallas Howard. So, as far as folks returning to direct episodes, you have Rick Famuyiwa, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Carl Weathers. Those are all names that folks are probably really excited by. Bryce Dallas Howard, in particular, has become a fan-favorite filmmaker due to her work on ‘Mando.’ But the new names are perhaps a bit more exciting.

Season 3 includes people such as Rachel Morrison, Lee Isaac Chung, and Peter Ramsey. These are all acclaimed filmmakers and welcome additions to the world of “Star Wars.” Morrison is an Oscar-nominated cinematographer who has directed several episodes of TV over recent years. Her feature directorial debut, “Flint Strong,” is one of the most anticipated titles coming soon. Chung is best known for his breakthrough feature, “Minari,” which was nominated for two Oscars, including Best Director. His next film is the highly-anticipated “Twisters.” Perhaps, Chung wanted to take a trip to the galaxy far, far away to get familiar with big productions before jumping into “Twisters?” The last new name is Ramsey, who is best known for his Oscar-winning work on “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.” His background is primarily in animation, so it’ll be exciting to see how he brings that experience and applies it to “Star Wars.”
There are some notable omissions, however. Dave Filoni, who directed two episodes of Season 1 and one episode of Season 2 is nowhere to be found. Perhaps he is just too busy with all of the other shows that he and Jon Favreau are attempting to launch. Speaking of Favreau, he isn’t among the filmmakers after stepping behind the camera for one episode last year. Though, as you might expect, he’s still showrunning and serving as head writer. The other two notable names are Peyton Reed and Robert Rodriguez, but both of those filmmakers have been busy with feature work, so it’s not completely shocking that they had to step away.
Needless to say, adding multiple Oscar-nominated filmmakers to the world of “The Mandalorian” shows how committed Lucasfilm is to keeping the crown jewel “Star Wars” series at the top of its game. “The Mandalorian” Season 3 debuts on Disney+ on March 1.
