Donald & Stephen Glover Replace Justin Simien As Writers On Upcoming ‘Star Wars’ Disney+ Series

Jul 28, 2023

“Star Wars” fans have two more Disney+ series coming this year, “Ahsoka” and “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.” But now they have new confirmation about a title announced nearly three years ago and has languished in development ever since. Variety reports that, yes, that’s right, “Lando,” all about the charismatic space pilot, is still coming to the streamer, but someone else other than Justin Simen will write the series.

And that someone is Donald Glover, who played Lando Calrissian in the 2018 film “Solo.” Glover and his brother Stephen Glover take over writing duties on the show as Simien exits. Variety doesn’t have a reason why Simien, best known for his show “Dear White People,” isn’t involved anymore. Simien’s latest film, Disney‘s “The Haunted Mansion,” hits theaters today. So without “Lando” in the personal pipeline, what will Simien do next? He’s also attached to a TV series remake of “Flashdance,” so that may be a possibility.
But Glover and his brother on board creatively for “Lando” is good news for Kathleen Kennedy and Lucasfilm. Glover’s magnetic turn as Calrissian in “Solo” was one of the only things critics and audiences could agree on about that film. And even earlier this year Glover spoke about how excited he is to return to the character. “I would love to play Lando again. It’s a fun time, being him,” he told GQ earlier this year. “It just has to be the right way to do it. Time is precious. The past couple of years, this pandemic shit, it really had people experience time… People realize their time is valuable. You only get so much. I’m not interested in doing anything that’s going to be a waste of my time or just a paycheck. I’d much rather spend time with people that I enjoy. It just has to be the right thing, and I think it could be. Lando is definitely somebody I like to hang out with.”
With “Atlanta” over and his remake series of “Mr. And Mrs. Smith” on the way at Amazon, Glover should have plenty of time to make “Lando” the show he wants it to be. And no worries about the news of Donald and Stephen Glover writing “Lando” dropping now: the duo reached their deal for their series before the WGA writers strike started 86 days ago. But given the current guild strikes, who knows when “Lando” will reach Disney+ subscribers?
