Dune Announces New Spin-Off Ahead of Its Movie Comeback, And It’ll Be All About the Shai-Hulud
May 23, 2025
In 2026, Dune will make its return to theaters with a trilogy finale, but the series is not going to leave fans dangling for another year. Today, the franchise announced a new spin-off that will tide over the fandom. Dune: Edge of a Crysknife: Rage of Shai-Hulud is in the works, and the spin-off will explore untold stories set within the Dune Universe.
Thanks to BOOM! Studios, Dune’s new spin-off will come to life with some of the most talented creators in comics. Brian Herberts and Kevin J. Anderson will be penning the story while artists Andrea Scalmazzi and Francesco Mazzoli put color to paper. So if you want to know more about Dune: Edge of a Crysknife: Rage of Shai-Hulud, you can read its official synopsis below:
“It’s a battle of generations as Mapes’s son, Samos, launches a bold assault against Baron Abulurd Harkonnen, son of Dimitri! To bring down the heavily fortified Harkonnen outpost, the Fremen will need a tool of unimaginable destruction…Shai-Hulud—the mighty sandworms!”

As you can see in the story’s official synopsis, Dune: Edge of a Crysknife: Rage of Shai-Hulud is not shying away from its action-centric story. The spin-off will follow Samos, the son of Mapes, as he tries to take down Baron Abulurd Harkonnen for good. In order to do this, Samos will need to harness the power of the Shai-Hulud, but that is easier said than done. Dune’s iconic sandworms are a force of nature, and even in the films, fans have seen it is nigh impossible to bend the creatures’ will.

Leto Atreides II plays a huge role in the future of the Dune franchise, and the character should be introduced in Villeneuve’s upcoming sequel.
Still, Samos will be tasked with the impossible feat, and Dune fans will get to see how the mission fares on August 27th. The comic will hit the shelves in later summer, and right now, you can preorder Dune: Edge of a Crysknife: Rage of Shai-Hulud at your local comic shop or go-to digital service.
If you cannot wait until August for more Dune goodness, well – you are in luck. BOOM! Studios has an entire Dune Universe on hand, including hit titles like Dune: House of Atreides, a prequel to the original sci-fi novel. The publisher has also released stories such as Dune: The Waters of Kanly, Dune: Tales From Arrakeen, Dune: House Harkonnen, and Dune: House Corrine. Each of these canon comics explore one of Dune’s major houses and the political factions they align with. So if you are missing the thrills Dune brought to theaters, these spin-off series will tide you over until Timothée Chalamet returns to the big screen in December 2026.
