Dwayne Johnson Says Old WB Regime Didn’t Want To Bring Back Henry Cavill as Superman

Jan 30, 2023

Black Adam star Dwayne Johnson claims he’s been campaigning for 6 years to bring back Henry Cavill as Superman in the DCEU.

Spoiler Alert: This article contains potential spoilers for Black AdamThe internet is abuzz with rumors of a massive cameo in Black Adam, and Dwayne Johnson, who plays the titular anti-hero, has also been teasing a potential showdown with a beloved DC comics character for the past few days.

The character in question is Superman, and Henry Cavill is rumored to be returning to the DCEU. Cavill’s return hasn’t been officially confirmed, but Johnson’s recent comments and early reactions all point toward Superman appearing in Black Adam.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson seemingly confirmed the same in a new interview.

“I feel that this serves not only Black Adam but it serves the larger DC Universe. But more importantly than that, it takes care of the fans. And that’s what you want your lead foot to be. So, yes, phone calls, meetings…But, man this was years man. Six years to get that done. I’m going to say that again, six years we first started about this and they kept saying no. Now, that leadership isn’t there anymore and we usher in a new era of the DC Universe.”

While Johnson didn’t explicitly state that Henry Cavill would appear as Superman in Black Adam, it’s all but certain he will. Six years ago, Cavill, Ben Affleck, and Zack Snyder were supposed to begin working on Justice League 2, and Black Adam hadn’t been greenlit yet.

WB had big plans for Superman, but they were put on hold after Snyder departed from the DCEU and Cavill’s Netflix deal. The studio had been contemplating introducing Supergirl as a replacement, along with a standalone Black Superman movie. Both the projects have been put on ice after the new Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zazlav’s shake-up of the company.

Shazam! and Peacemaker also featured a faceless version of Henry Cavill’s Superman, but it seems the character is set to appear in full glory in the DCEU again. And it’s all thanks to The Rock.

Black Adam Will Expand The DCEU

Warner Bros.

After numerous standalone movies, WBD has finally managed to come up with a long-term plan for their most prized franchise currently, the DC Extended Universe. Black Adam and The Flash are set to reboot and expand the DCEU, with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom also bringing back Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman.

Some would argue it’s a couple of years too late, but at least we don’t get another recasting. And three vastly different Batmen at the same time is every fan’s dream scenario. Hopefully, the WBD won’t make any more blunders in the future.

As Black Adam, a leaked post-credits scene is circulating on the web and confirms a brief cameo of Henry Cavill’s Superman. All those reshoots weren’t just quality-control measures, it seems. Dwayne Johnson has also declared that he plans to fight both Superman and Shazam, probably not in the same movie, but that is the main objective. In fact, Black Adam was first intended to appear in Shazam! before he got a solo movie.

Black Adam also marks the live-action debut of the Justice Society of America, and it’s not long before fans get to witness the team on the big screen. Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, Black Adam premieres on October 21, 2022.
