Elizabeth Olsen Cast In ‘Seven Sisters’ FX Drama & Sean Durkin To Direct

Mar 13, 2025

A24 announced Sean Durkin‘s next project, “Deep Cuts” starring Saoirse Ronan and Austin Butler, a couple of weeks ago, but that’s not the only upcoming for the director.  Deadline reports Durkin also has a series pilot in the works, and it’ll see him reunite with the A-list actress who made her film debut in his 2011 feature “Martha Marcy May Marlene.”

Elizabeth Olsen is set to star in FX‘s “Seven Sisters,” a drama to be directed by Durkin. He’ll shoot a pilot written by “Irma Vep” and “Succession” scribe Will Arbery, who also serves as executive producer.  Garrett Basch is also involved creatively, and if FX signs on for a whole series, it’ll be Basch’s fifth show with the network.  No word if Durkin will direct the rest of the series if FX gives it the go-ahead.
So what’s “Seven Sisters” about? Olsen will star as a sister in a large, tightknit family who starts to hear a voice no one else can hear, which inevitably unearths long-buried secrets. That sounds like a juicy psychological drama set-up, very similar to Olsen and Durkin’s last collaboration nearly fifteen years ago. But FX execs need to like what Durkin presents to them before this projects becomes a full-fledged reunion between the director and actress.
Basch’s recent work with FX all but guarantees success for “Seven Sisters,” though. Other projects Basch has developed via a first-look deal with the network through his Dive banner include “Devs,” “Reservation Dogs,” “What We Do In The Shadows,” and Sterlin Harjo‘s upcoming noir series set in Tulsa, Oklahoma with Ethan Hawke. And Basch is affiliated with other recent hit shows, too: “Ripley” over at Netflix, Apple TV+‘s “Time Bandits,” and Hulu‘s “Interior Chinatown.” Film credits for Basch include Taika Waititi‘s soccer comedy “Next Goal Wins” and the upcoming “Klara And The Sun.”
As for Arbery, his biggest writing credit remains HBO‘s “Succession,” but “Irma Vep” also scored high marks with critics a couple of years ago.  He also pens Romain Gavras‘ upcoming film “Sacrifice” with Chris Evans and Anya Taylor-Joy.
Durkin’s “Deep Cuts” adapts Holly Brickley‘s novel of the same name, about two ambitious, musically-inclined twenty-somethings as they navigate life and love in the mid-2000s. It’s no secret A24 expects the film to be a big hit after the critical acclaim for “The Iron Claw” two years ago, and having Ronan and Butler star should bring its own buzz. Expect “Deep Cuts” in theaters sometime next year.
As for Olsen, she stars next in “The Assessment” opposite Alicia Vikander, which had it world premiere at TIFF last Fall.  She also stars in the upcoming A24 rom-com “Eternity” with Miles Teller and Callum Turner, and also serves as an executive producer on that one.  As for upcoming projects, she’ll star in Sam Esmail‘s “Panic Carefully“ with Julia Roberts and Eddie Redmayne; Warner Bros. should have that thriller ready for a 2026 theatrical release.
Stay tuned for more details about “Seven Sisters” soon.
