Emma Stone & Nathan Fielder Host A Hexed Home Improvement Series Co-Starring Benny Safdie

Oct 12, 2023

Yep, that’s cursed, alright. That idea, a hex, a curse, the concept, the phrase, is explored in delightfully weird ways in “The Curse,” easily one of our most anticipated series of the year that’s almost upon us. From Oscar-winner Emma Stone, comedian Nathan Fielder (“The Rehearsal”), and indie filmmaker/actor Benny Safdie—all of whom star and executive produce—“The Curse” looks exceptionally wild, strange, and funny. It’s a series about a married couple trying to conceive a child while co-starring on a HGTV-esque Home Improvement show, and it’s set for a November release on Showtime.

We’re not the only ones anticipating the show. The New York Film Festival, one of the choosiest festivals around, dedicated to cinema only and mainly the arthouse, made the rare exception to include “The Curse” in its programming this year. “The Curse” will make its world premiere at NYFF this week, debuting three of the episodes of the series.
On top of Stone and Fielder as the married couple and Benny Safdie as an ingratiating producer, “The Curse” also features. Oscar nominee Barkhad Abdi, Emmy nominee Corbin Bernsen, and Constance Shulman.
It almost looks like an absurdist horror movie as shot by Yorgos Lanthimos in his deadpan “Dogtooth” days. NYFF describes it as a “brilliantly discomfiting collaboration” between Stone, Fielder, and Safdie. Here’s the official synopsis:
About The Curse: THE CURSE is a genre-bending SHOWTIME® series that explores how an alleged curse disturbs the relationship of a newly married couple as they try to conceive a child while co-starring in their new home-improvement show. Produced by A24, THE CURSE is co-created and executive-produced by Benny Safdie and Nathan Fielder, who also serves as a director. Emma Stone executive produces alongside Dave McCary and Ali Herting through their Fruit Tree banner. Josh Safdie also serves as executive producer.
