Everything Everywhere All at Once Leads Spirit Awards Nominations
Dec 13, 2022
Everything Everywhere All at Once, the sci-fi comedy about a laundress played by Michelle Yeoh who must transcend space and time to save her family, led the 2023 Spirit Awards nominations, earning eight in all — including for Best Feature, for lead actor Yeow, and for directing duo The Daniels, aka Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert.
Tar, starring Cate Blanchett as an orchestra conductor in freefall, earned seven Spirit Awards nominations, including for Best Feature, lead actor Cate Blanchett, and director Todd Field. Among the films shut out was Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale, despite a wave of accolades for the film and star Brendan Fraser.

There were 409 films eligible for Spirit Awards this year, a record. The nominations are open to films budgeted at $30 million or less, and this year’s acting categories are gender neutral for the first time. (The budget cap for the John Cassavetes Award, celebrating microbudget features, is $1 million.)
Guest presenters Taylour Paige and Raúl Castillo, both of whom were among last year’s winners, reveal the nominees of the 2023 Film Independent Spirit Awards in an announcement you can watch here or above. The awards will take place on Saturday, March 4, 2023.
