The F1 trailer offers a closer look at the new racing movie starring Brad Pitt. Pitt is set to star as Sonny Hayes, a Formula One driver who is forced to retire after an accident, but who finds himself pulled back into the industry when he is asked to mentor a fresh-faced young driver named Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris). The ensemble cast of the Brad Pitt movie also includes Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies, Javier Bardem, Sarah Niles, Will Merrick, and real-life Formula One drivers and crew playing themselves, including Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen.
The official trailer for F1 has now been unveiled during the broadcast of the Formula 1 British Grand Prix. Check it out below:
The trailer opens with Sonny breaking down a racing strategy over a dark screen. The production logos quickly give way to a quiet and serious conversation where the character is holding court. However, the trailer quickly picks up speed as it heads to the racetrack, showcasing the visually stunning and action-packed material that will be brought to the screen during various races throughout the movie.
Can F1 One-Up Its Director’s Previous Movie?
Joseph Kosinski Previously Helmed Top Gun: Maverick
While the F1 trailer showcases daring vehicular stunts and special effects, it nevertheless has very big shoes to fill. Director Joseph Kosinki’sprevious action movie outing was the 2022 legacy sequel Top Gun: Maverick, which was a record-breaking smash hit. In addition to earning a Certified Fresh score of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, it grossed $1.496 billion against its roughly $170 million budget, becoming the twelfth highest-grossing movie of all time worldwide and the fifth-highest on the domestic chart.
Related Every Box Office Record Broken By Top Gun: Maverick 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick has already broken multiple impressive records at the box office, including several for actor Tom Cruise and Paramount.
One reason the movie was so successful was its blend of practical flying footage with seamless special effects. While audiences breathlessly await the upcoming Top Gun 3, Kosinki has delivered F1, applying the same method of filmmaking to on-the-ground Formula 1 racing as he did to military fighter pilots flying a deadly mission. The trailer seems to showcase that the new movie is just as exhilarating in its use of these techniques as Maverick, though it remains to be seen if it is successful in its own right.
It’s nearly impossible that F1 would become a hit at the level of Top Gun: Maverick. For one thing, it doesn’t have a connection to a movie franchise, despite the fact that the Formula 1 IP may help boost its notoriety. Additionally, Tom Cruise is a global star who is heavily linked to death-defying stunts thanks to the Mission: Impossible franchise, which boosted the realism of Maverick. However, the combination of A-list star Brad Pitt and the thrilling racing sequences showcased in the trailer could make it a bona fide smash on its own terms.
