Fans Speculate on Sgt. Rock DCU Future After James Gunn Tease
Sep 9, 2024
Ahead of Superman, fans can look forward to Creature Commandos, which is set to stream on Max to be the official start of James Gunn’s new DC Universe. New photos and a premiere date have just been revealed, but Gunn also just dropped some information about Creature Commandos that has fans speculating about a DC rumor becoming true. A classic DC World War II hero might be making his way into Gunn’s larger DCU plans.
On Instagram, Gunn confirmed that the publicity photo of G.I. Robot is alongside Easy Company, a World War II fighting unit in DC Comics that first appeared in Our Army at War #81 in April 1959. The team is typically led by Stg. Rock, who many fans have speculated is in the photo of G.I. Robot as the soldier with his arm wrapped around his hand. While Sgt. Rock appearing in James Gunn’s DCU would be worthwhile on its own, this also comes just days after the rumor from Nexus Point News reported that Challengers and Queer director Luca Guadagnino is set to direct a Sgt. Rock movie for Warner Bros. While nothing has been confirmed by WB or a major trade, the rumor certainly seems more plausible now if Easy Company and likely Sgt. Rock will appear in Creature Commandos.
Sgt. Rock Might Be the Next Big DC Title
Warner Bros. has been trying to make a Sgt. Rock movie since the 1980s, with Arnold Schwarzenegger set to star as the title character. While Schwarzenegger never got to play the role, a reference to it can be seen in 1987’s Predator as Shane Black’s character Rick Hawkins can be seen reading a Sgt. Rock comic book. In the mid-2000s, Bruce Willis was considered for the lead role with Guy Richie set to direct, but Ritchie departed to work on Sherlock Holmes, and Willis would play a similar role as General Joseph Colton in 2013’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation. In 2023 at San Diego Comic-Con, MovieWeb interviewed producer Butch Lukić about the DC Animated film Justice League: Warworld, and he mentioned how he was a fan of Sgt. Rock and wish they could have given him a bigger role in the Tomorrowverse.
Despite Sgt. Rock was not part of James Gunn’s DCU announcement from January 2023, but the director/studio co-president said that was only half the slate, with more news to come. Since then, they have confirmed their work on a Teen Titans movie and a Blue Beetle animated series. Guadagnio might not seem like the typical pick for a DC movie, and Sgt. Rock doesn’t feel like a conventional pick for the director’s style; it speaks to the fact that Gunn wants the DCU to stand apart from the MCU by going after big-name directors. While Sgt. Rock might not be the biggest name to audiences, a blockbuster film from the director of Challengers and Call Me by Your Name is likely to attract a lot of attention.
