Fantastic Four Set Images Reveal First Look at The Thing

Sep 1, 2024

A set image from Marvel’s Fantastic Four: First Steps has recently appeared online, delivering the first look of what appears to be a comic-accurate, and practical, costume for The Thing.

The still was taken from a video, also shared on the same X/Twitter account.

While this seems to be the appearance that Ebon Moss-Bachrach, who plays Ben Grimm aka The Thing, will have on set, fans may have to wait a little longer to see the full effect of the character, which the actor previously revealed employs CGI and motion capture, unlike Michael Chiklis’ version in the 2005 Fantastic Four movie. He told Jimmy Kimmel Live:

“I don’t think it’s the suit. Michael Chiklis wore a suit. Apparently, the suit was really uncomfortable. We’re past that I think. It’s a little cosplay and amateur now with the technology. It’s mostly performance capture. ”

The Fantastic Four Seems to Be Aiming to Please Long-Term Fans

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has made many fans happy over the last 16 years of movies and TV shows, bringing both the biggest and also the most obscure characters of Marvel Comics to life in a way that had never been seen before. However, the studio has also come under a fair amount of criticism from some corners of the fandom who have not been pleased with changes made to the appearance of some characters and origin stories.

After a terrible run of movies in 2023, Marvel Studios is back on top following the success of Deadpool & Wolverine this summer, but the biggest challenge begins next year. Following the release of Captain America: Brave New World in February, The Fantastic Four: First Steps will follow in July, and today’s first look suggests that the film is not looking to alienate fans of Marvel’s first family by messing too much with the look of the group’s most instantly recognizable rocky member.

While the 2015 Fantastic Four movie turned The Thing shied away from the original comic book look of the character, the set images revealed may not be the final on-screen appearance of Ben Grimm, but it gives hope that fans will be getting to see him realized in the most accurate way in any modern adaptation.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps
will arrive in theaters on July 25, 2025.
