The Five-Star Weekend, a new Peacock show based on the novel by Elin Hilderbrand, has a five-star cast to match. The show centers around famous food blogger Hollis, played by Jennifer Garner, who is best known for projects like spy thriller Alias and quintessential rom-com 13 Going on 30. A few months after Hollis’ husband unexpectedly passes away, she invites a friend from every stage of her life to her beach house in Nantucket. The line-up includes childhood bestie Tatum (‘90s icon and certified It Girl Chloë Sevigny), college buddy Dru-Ann (Regina Hall, who just appeared in the Oscar-winning One Battle After Another), mom pal Brooke (comedic genius D’Arcy Carden), and internet friend Gigi (Gemma Chan, best known for Crazy Rich Asians but who just made waves in Sundance darling Josephine earlier this year). Of course, all of these women have their own problems and secrets they’re dealing with during this girls’ getaway. Dru-Ann is getting cancelled online for making flippant comments about mental health, Tatum is waiting to hear back from her doctor about whether she has cancer, Brooke’s marriage is on the rocks, and Gigi was — surprise! — having an affair with Hollis’ husband. The trip acts as a pressure cooker waiting to explode long-simmering rivalries and rip open old wounds, but it may also be just what everyone needs to heal and move forward, too. Collider got the chance to speak to Sevigny, Carden, and Chan about their work in the hilarious, heartbreaking show. During the conversation, Carden talked about reuniting with a League of Their Own co-star, while Sevigny and Chan broke down their character’s most intense moments. COLLIDER: D’Arcy, your character and performance resonated so deeply with me, and I know that’s going to be true for a lot of queer women. I feel like the cherry on top of your storyline was the fact that it included a little League of Their Own reunion. D’ARCY CARDEN: I know! So special! Can you tell me a little bit about how that came about and what it was like working with Roberta [Colindrez] in this capacity again? CARDEN: Yes, we love Roberta. CHLOË SEVIGNY: Love! I had just seen her on Broadway before she came, and I was like, “Girl crush.” CARDEN: I know, she’s so girl crush. She’s the world’s girl crush. And boy crush. She is just crush. She’s crush. I love Roberta. I read the book, and I loved Brooke — I loved her storyline — and I had no idea who would play Sunny. There was a day when a couple of the producers and Minkie [Spiro], the director, talked to me about possible actors that would play Sunny, and when Roberta’s name came up, every single person just went, “No, that’s who it is. Yup, that’s it. That’s it. It’s got to be Roberta.” I love working with her, and we’re such good friends in real life. I told her this on set — I was like, “I almost forgot that you’re such a good actor.” [Laughs] I know her so much as a friend that to get to act with her was really special. I just love her.

One of my favorite scenes is when the women confront Gigi about the affair on the tennis court, because it’s sort of zany, but it’s also pretty intense. SEVIGNY: Zany is the perfect word. Thank you for that, Collider. Of course! Gemma, I’m curious what it was like for you to film that, especially with the logistical elements of these tennis balls whizzing around you at the same time. GEMMA CHAN: Yeah, it was a little stressful. [Laughs] I had Tatum barking at me and these balls flying at my head. Aggressive. CARDEN: It was very rhythmic, and there were logistics of who, what, when, where, how we were going to do this. It took some choreography. [To Chan] You really did such a great job in that scene, because that isn’t easy. CHAN: Aww, thank you. It’s the culmination of this secret that has been burning a hole inside of Gigi up until the sixth episode, and then it all comes out. And actually what comes out is the truth, and it’s to these women, who actually end up kind of holding her, which is beautiful.
Chloë Sevigny Breaks Down Tatum’s Heartbreaking Massage Scene

“She’s terrified but doesn’t want to show that vulnerability to almost anyone.”

I love these moments of catharsis that happen. Another one of my favorites of those is when we see Tatum have that emotional release during her massage. I found that really heartbreaking yet cathartic at the same time. That’s a thing — our body does hold these emotions — so I’m curious for you, Chloë, can you talk about going to that more vulnerable place with her at that moment? SEVIGNY: Yeah, I’ve had an experience like that on a massage table. I think touch therapy is really powerful, and I think that Tatum is having a hard time accepting what’s happening to her and her body. She’s terrified but doesn’t want to show that vulnerability to almost anyone, including her husband, who she has this incredible relationship with. I think it’s just an opportunity for her to let it out. I like crying onscreen. I’m an ugly crier, but that’s okay. No, you are not! You looked beautiful through the whole thing. CARDEN: Agreed, agreed. There’s so much crying in this show. SEVIGNY: I know, we were all like, “Wait, we thought we were doing a comedy.” But did we? This show is about mourning. CARDEN: It really shocked us. Every day on set, we’d be like, “Are you crying again?” Or even not on purpose — it’s just a cry show. Yeah, it is a cry show, but a therapeutic cry. You cry, and then you feel better after.

There is also such great comedy in this. I feel like one of my favorite lines is when Hollis is talking to Gigi about the betrayal, and she’s like, “I made a playlist with Doechii for you!” What artist would you all have to have on your girls’ trip playlist?

CHAN: Doechii, Charli XCX. CARDEN: I was just listening to Lorde while I was getting my makeup done, and we all said, “We love Lorde.” SEVIGNY: I was pitching Edie Brickell & New Bohemians for us to have our dance to. CARDEN: There are so many. An Aretha moment — Aretha Franklin. CHEN: Donna Summer. CARDEN: Yeah. Oh, yeah. All of that disco. I have so many playlists that are all-girl playlists — no boys.
