It’s time to get back off the ice as The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers has been canceled. Deadline reports that the show, which serves as a continuation of the original Mighty Ducks movie series from the 1990s, has been axed after two seasons at Disney+. Season 1 premiered back in March 2021, and it was picked up for season 2 several months later after franchise star Emilio Estevez announced his exit. Josh Duhamel had been brought in to replace him as a new character to fill the void, and season 2 debuted in September 2022. The future of the show was in question ever since, but the show’s now reportedly been nixed along with John Stamos’ basketball dramedy series Big Shot.
Lauren Graham led the cast of the series, and in the first season, she co-starred with Estevez. The latter had been reprising his role as Gordon Bombay, the character he played in the previous movies. While he had been expected to return for a second season, it was announced that Estevez had parted ways with The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, leading to the decision to cast Duhamel as a new main character. There were initial rumors that the actor’s exit was over vaccine mandates, but Estevez would later claim that he wasn’t happy with season 2’s creative direction.
“I want to address what transpired and clear up some falsehoods which appeared in an article regarding my decision to depart The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers,” Estevez said in a statement in 2021. “In the final analysis, this was nothing more than a good old-fashioned contract dispute and not, as some would believe an anti-vaccine position.”
He continued, “My exit from the show was due to a myriad of creative differences – any other narrative is false. To the fans of the franchise – I am as disappointed as you are. To my Ducks cast and crew – have a wonderful season 2 on the show and please know that I will miss you all. It was an honor and a thrill to be able to return as the iconic and beloved character, Gordon Bombay, a character which has been a celebrated benchmark in my 40-year career.”

With Coach Bombay out of the picture, season 2 introduced Duhamel as Colin Cole, a former NHL player who steps up to help coach the youth hockey team. The show also stars Brady Noon, Maxwell Simkins, Swayam Bhatia, Julee Cerda, Luke Islam, Bella Higginbotham, Taegen Burns, Kiefer O’Reilly, De’Jon Watts, and Naveeen Paddock.
Other original stars had also apepared on the show to join Estevez. That includes Matt Doherty, Elden Henson, Garette Henson, Vincent A. LaRusso, Marguerite Moreau, and Justin Wong. There had been teases of getting others like Kenan Thompson and Joshua Jackson involved, and fans were also wanting to see Shaun Weiss return as Goldberg after the former child star’s recent return to acting, but those potential appearances never came to be.
