Gaslighter Featured, Reviews Film Threat

Oct 7, 2024

Virginia Powers Hendry’s horror short Gaslighter taps into some of our basic fears, walking the thin tightrope between safety and regret. Co-writer Anastasia Washington stars as our protagonist, Anne, who arrives home one dark evening only to find her power cut and the door left wide open. She calls her boyfriend, Jeff, who promises to stay on the phone as she searches the house for monsters and killers. Thinking Anne is overreacting, he dismisses her fears but agrees to stay on the phone. When Anne’s search comes up empty, she’s safe, right?

“…Anne arrives home one dark evening only to find her power cut and the door left wide open.”
Coming home to a dark, empty house is creepy enough, but what if you have the “feeling” that something is wrong? Gaslighter offers this feeling of a slow thrill ride. It plays on the sense of security we often take for granted and sends a chill down your spine to throw you off. This is precisely what filmmakers Hendry and Washington conjure up.
Without giving away the ending, a horror film often presents two choices. So why not allow our protagonist, Anne, to make both choices? While Gaslighter could have heightened the creepiness and danger further, the short does the job and will make a great addition to your Halloween movie festivities or film festival.
