Good Omens Season 3 Already Mapped Out, Is Based on an Idea by Neil Gaiman & Terry Pratchett

Jul 17, 2023

Seminal author Neil Gaiman has revealed that a third season of Good Omens has already been mapped out, and that it would be based on an idea for a follow-up novel that he and the late, great Terry Pratchett devised in the 1990s. Speaking with SFX Magazine, Gaiman explained that the upcoming second season of Good Omens is an original idea thought up by him that could be used to lead into the ideas planned out by himself and Pratchett all those years ago.

“Because the hypothetical season three exists, there is a story that is there, and I didn’t feel that we could drive straight from season one into that. I knew what the stakes were. I knew what the parameters were. I also knew that I had David [Tennant] and Michael [Sheen]. I had the angels from plot number one. I had demons from plot number one. And with anybody that I wanted to bring back, but didn’t have room for right now, I did not have to bring them back as themselves.”

Based on Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s 1990 novel, the first series of Good Omens introduces audiences to Michael Sheen and David Tennant as Aziraphale and Crowley, an angel and a demon, who over 6000-years have formed a bond that transcends their respective sides in the holy war. Picking up with the pair in 2018, the long-time angel and demon acquaintances have grown accustomed to life on Earth as representatives of Heaven and Hell but must seek to prevent the coming of the Antichrist and thus Armageddon, in the final battle between Heaven and Hell.

Originally intended as a standalone series (there is only one novel after all), the first season of Good Omens was met with rave reviews. Particular praise was heaped upon the delightful duo played by Sheen and Tennant, whose collective charm was simply far too divine for just one adventure…

Thus, Good Omens season two will go beyond the original source material to illuminate the uncanny friendship between Aziraphale, a fussy angel and rare book dealer, and the fast-living demon Crowley. Having been on Earth since The Beginning, and with the Apocalypse thwarted, Aziraphale and Crowley are getting back to easy living among mortals in London’s Soho when an unexpected messenger presents a surprising mystery.

Once again led by Michael Sheen and David Tennant, Good Omens season two will also see the return of Jon Hamm as archangel Gabriel, Doon Mackichan as archangel Michael, and Gloria Obianyo as archangel Uriel. Returning this season in new roles are Miranda Richardson as demon Shax, Maggie Service as Maggie, and Nina Sosanya as Nina, with new faces joining the misfits in Heaven and Hell, including Liz Carr as angel Saraqael, Quelin Sepulveda as angel Muriel, and Shelley Conn as demon Beelzebub.

Good Omens season two will consist of six episodes and will debut exclusively on Prime Video on July 28.
