Well, it’s official, and James Gunn’s DC Studios plan is slowly moving forward. Today, HBO and MAX confirmed that it’s picked up an eight-episode Green Lantern series for a season one pick-up. The series comes from Emmy®-nominee Chris Mundy (HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country,” “Ozark”) will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Emmy-winner Damon Lindelof (HBO’s “Watchmen” and “The Leftovers”) and Eisner Award winner Tom King (“Mister Miracle,” “Supergirl”) will co-write the new series with Mundy. Lindelof and King will also serve as executive producers.

HBO, in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios, announced today a green light for “Lanterns,” a new drama series based on the iconic DC title. The series follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.
Previously, Gunn said “Lanterns” would have a “True Detective” vibe and be less fantastical than the previous movies so that jibes with the official announcement details. Green Lantern Guy Gardner is also being played by Nathon Fillion in Gunn’s 2025 “Superman” movie, but who will play Jordan and Stewart, two of the most classic Lantern heroes, is unknown.

“Lanterns” will be the first DC Studios TV series from Gunn and Safran. Currently, “Superman,” the first film, will arrive in the summer of 2025, and “Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow” will arrive in the summer of 2026. Rumors are swirling that Gunn and Safran’s “Booster Gold” series is coming together fast, too, but so far, nothing is official.
