HBO Green Lantern DCU Series Gets Release Date Info From DC Studios

Feb 25, 2025

HBO’s upcoming Green Lantern series finally has an expected release window, and DC fans will be delighted to hear about the latest news. Lanterns is currently in production with Rebel Ridge star set Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, while Kyle Chandler plays Hal Jordan. With a stacked cast and crew attached, the True Detective-style Green Lantern show is among the fanbase’s most anticipated projects from the upcoming DCU slate. It was previously unclear when it would premiere on HBO, but now DC Studios has confirmed audiences will be watching Lanterns sooner than expected.
During a press event for DC Studios, co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran did not shy away from discussing the future of the DCU slate. While they provided some not-so-positive updates about several projects, it seems Lanterns is full-steam ahead. The Green Lantern series is eyeing an early 2026 premiere on HBO, the company confirmed. A specific release date has not been revealed, but if production continues smoothly, it seems a wintertime window is in the cards.

New ‘Superman’ Update Probably Won’t Be a Laughing Matter for Many Fans

A new scoop of info has revealed that there will be plenty of humor in James Gunn’s newest DCU film.

Gunn also confirmed that projects like Lanterns, which explores a galaxy-wide alien conspiracy that will have consequences for the greater cinematic universe, are being made based on their own merits. Yes, for those keeping up with the DC Universe and films like Superman, Gunn said that “There’s going to be special things in there for people who have seen both.” However, each DCU title is meant to stand on its own, including Lanterns. His words:

“We remain steadfast in making sure that each of these projects works as a standalone project, so that you can go see ‘Superman’ and you can watch ‘Lanterns’ without having to see both of them.

‘Lanterns’ Star Is Devoted to His Iconic DCU Role

Netflix

As cameras begin to roll on Lanterns, series star Aaron Pierre recently discussed taking on the beloved role of John Stewart. As the younger Green Lantern counterpart to Kyle Handler’s veteran space cop, Pierre will presumably be the DCU’s main will-powered superhero. The actor is not taking the opportunity for granted, as he described his upcoming Lanterns role as “the beautiful character of John Stewart, who I love very dearly.”

“Right now, I’m locked in and focused on a very beautiful project. A project that’s very dear to my heart. It’s ‘Lanterns’ and I’ll be portraying the beautiful character of John Stewart, who I love very dearly. I’m going to do all in my power to bring him to life in a way that resonates with the people and celebrates that character.”

For those who saw his breakout role in Rebel Ridge last year, his casting in the DCU series came as a no-brainer. After playing a former marine at odds with a corrupted police department, Pierre now again plays a similar role as John Stewart, another Marine who later joins the Green Lantern Corps. If Lanterns proves to be a success for HBO and DC Studios, fans should expect Pierre to become a staple part of the DCU moving forward, and eventually team up with other superheroes.
