HBO’s Casey Bloys Loves Mike White’s “Really Fun” Pitch For ‘The White Lotus’ S3 & Respects Jesse Armstrong’s Decision To End ‘Succession’

Mar 23, 2023

When will production begin on “The White Lotus” Season 3? That’s inconclusive, but HBO is high on Mike White‘s surprise hit, so expect them to pull out all the stops for the upcoming season. And Variety reports that HBO’s Casey Bloys says White’s pitch for the new season was a big hit with the bosses.

“[White] just pitched us the idea and it’s great,” Cloys told Edith Bowman at Series Mania in France. “It’s a really fun idea and he’s shown it’s possible.” The HBO higher-up also added that White is “cating people you know” for the new season, but writing the characters in a way that “allows you to rediscover them in a new light.” Who’s that a nod to? Maybe some S2 stars like F. Murray Abraham, Meghann Fahy, Aubrey Plaza, and Will Sharpe will return?
At this point, who knows? The only thing confirmed about “The White Lotus” S3 right now is White’s confirmation that the show will take place in Asia, with death and Eastern religion and spirituality being the central themes. Whatever the case, expect the new season to be in the running for even more Emmys and Golden Globes: the first two seasons collected ten of the former and two of the latter.
What else did Bloys have to say in France? Well, he’s disappointed that Jesse Armstrong decided to end “Succession,” but he respects the choice. “I would have taken more [seasons], but generally speaking, that is the kind of thing you want to leave to a creator,” Bloys said. “When a show is doing well, in this case, Jesse felt it was the right ending. He knew there is an open door, and if he felt it, he could have done more. But that’s an ideal situation that he’s choosing to end on his terms when he wants, telling the story he wants. But if he said, ‘I’ve got two more seasons,’ I would have said, ‘Okay, good.’”
The fourth and final season of “Succession” premieres on HBO this weekend on March 26. Will the series go out with a bang? All signs point to yes, with star Brian Cox lauding the show’s finale. “I think we’ve, you know, got to the point where the show has reached its natural closure,” Cox explained. “A lot of shows outstay their welcome, and I think our show is perfect, and neat, in the way it is.” Expect “Succession” S4 to be on the hunt for more Emmys like “The White Lotus,” too.
HBO never intended “The White Lotus” to be more than a one-off limited series. But now it’s one of the network’s most popular shows as HBO looks to fill the gap “Succession” leaves after it ends. And given the pedigree of HBO shows, expect that there will be another new drama joining the ranks of “The White Lotus,” “The Last Of Us,” and “House Of The Dragon” soon.
