‘House Of The Dragon’ Showrunner Ryan Condal Says The Jon Snow Spin-Off Could Be More Interesting In 25 Years
Jun 18, 2024
In this week’s episode of Bingeworthy, our TV and streaming podcast host Mike DeAngelo sent a raven and rode a dragon back to Westeros to talk to “House of the Dragon” showrunner Ryan Condal. Condal created “House Of The Dragon” with George R. R. Martin and originally co-ran the show with “Game Of Thrones” director/producer Miguel Sapochnik. Sapochnik very publicly left the series after season one, leaving Condal to run the show on his own. We’ll have more from that conversation shortly, but in a brief excerpt, Condal spoke about the “canceled” Jon Snow series meant to star Kit Harington. While he didn’t necessarily give it new hope, the ‘Dragon’ showrunner spoke on how it could still be relevant down the road.

For context, as “Game Of Thrones” was ending and after the success of “House of the Dragon” season one, HBO started developing multiple “Game of Thrones” spin-offs. One that fans were particularly excited about was the “Jon Snow” spin-off. Kit Harington recently shared with The Playlist that the series was “not being developed” anymore after the creative team couldn’t land on a story that was compelling enough to warrant a series. Still, Condal, while not officially working on another show, said he had a morsel of an idea that would require time to pull off.
“I think that story is actually more interesting maybe like twenty years from now—doing a legacy sequel or whatever you call that thing to when many, many years have passed,” Condal explained. “I think [the original idea] was probably something that was, ‘Jon immediately returning to The Wall.’ Well, you know, the threat is vanquished. I mean, you could tell a great character story up there, but I think in twenty or twenty-five years, there’s a very interesting story to be told there.”
There’s an argument to be made that HBO will not wait 25 years for a “Jon Snow” spin-off series, but maybe Condal is speaking more metaphorically and or onto something— time and space could allow for this idea to emerge in a few years. Hell, perhaps once “House Of The Dragon” is over, Condal could pitch his concept should it come together. Who knows? More from this interview soon. – Additional reporting by Mike DeAngelo.
