‘I Definitely Want to Continue’

Summary
Karen Gillan is enthusiastic about returning to the
Jumanji
franchise and the character she plays, finding a personal connection.
Gillan expresses a desire to explore more dramatic roles beyond genre movies, despite her love for them.
While considering branching out, Gillan has her eye on continuing her involvement in genre films, and would love a role in James Gunn’s DCU.
The future of the Jumanji franchise has been in doubt over the last few years, mainly thanks to the ever-increasing workload of its main stars, but Karen Gillan would love to do more. While speaking to MovieWeb, the actress was asked which of her past franchises she would like to return to, and it seems that she would be happy to reprise almost any of her roles, which, of course, includes the MCU’s Nebula.
Gillan joins Russell Crowe in her latest movie, the Adam Cooper-directed Sleeping Dogs, which is a crime mystery thriller that puts her in very different territory to recent films such as The Bubble, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3, and the Jumanji movies. When addressing which of those roles she would love to go back to, it is clear that Gillan is particularly fond of characters she can identify with, and those with many levels to discover. She told MovieWeb:
“I mean, I definitely want to continue the Jumanji movies. They’re so much fun, and I really like that character as well. I think I relate to that character in the sense of being this, like, feeling like a nerdy teenage girl who’s trapped in the body of someone that does a lot of, like, action stuff. So, I’m like, ‘Oh, this is a perfect representation of me, I really enjoyed that.’ And then, Marvel too, I mean, I love that character so much. I always find new things with Nebula, which is really cool for me.”
Karen Gillan Loves Genre Films, but Wouldn’t Mind More Dramas
RLJE Films
Having come to the attention of the world in the role of the Eleventh Doctor’s main companion, Amy Pond, in Doctor Who, Gillan has frequently found herself playing roles in genre movies such as Outcast, Oculus, Dual, and Gunpowder Milkshake. Although she admits to having a love of these roles, she would also like to try doing general dramas a bit more often. She continued:
“I think maybe just some drama, some sort of straight drama that’s not genre based. Even though I love genre stuff, but I think dabbling in that would be fun, and it’s also what I thought I was going to do when I started, so it’d be nice to kind of see that through.”
Related Best Karen Gillan Movies, Ranked From comedy to drama to the action-packed MCU, Karen Gillan has starred in a wide variety of roles. Here are eight of her best movies, ranked.
That being said, there are certainly a few genre routes that the actress has in her sights right now, including a possible place in James Gunn’s DCU – with the star citing Poison Ivy as her role of choice – as well as a hope of being asked to take a role in a movie about the recent viral Willy Wonka Experience. So, while she may want to spread her dramatic wings, there is a very strong chance that she will thankfully not be leaving behind genre movies anytime soon.
Sleeping Dogs
is released in theaters on March 22, 2024.
